The Scottish Political System Since Devolution written by Paul Cairney and has been published by Andrews UK Limited this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-01-30 with Political Science categories.

This book presents a narrative of Scottish politics since devolution in 1999. It compares eight years of coalition government under Scottish Labour and the Scottish Liberal Democrats with four years of Scottish National Party minority government. It outlines the relative effect of each government on Scottish politics and public policy in various contexts, including: high expectations for ‘new politics' that were never fully realised; the influence of, and reactions from, the media and public; the role of political parties; the Scottish Government's relations with the UK Government, EU institutions, local government, quasi-governmental and non-governmental actors; and, the finance available to fund policy initiatives. It then considers how far Scotland has travelled on the road to constitutional change, comparing the original devolved framework with calls for independence or a new devolution settlement. The book draws heavily on information produced since 1999 by the Scottish Devolution Monitoring project (which forms one part of the devolution monitoring project led by the Constitution Unit, UCL) and is supplemented by new research on public policy, minority government, intergovernmental relations and constitutional change.

1999 saw the first Scottish Parliament since the 1707 Treaty of the Union. In this work, Gerry Hassan and Chris Warhurst bring together a number of commentators to create a comprehensive overview of the first year of the Scottish Parliament. Their aim is to take the reader through the expectations pre-May 6th, how May 6th results changed things, the development since then and finally to map out possible future developments. The book is split into four sections of approximately 20 chapters, each written by authoritative political commentators. A prior knowledge of Scottish politics is not needed for the reader to gain an understanding of the events of the year discussed.

Substantially revised and rewritten in the light of the 1997 General Election and Devolution referendum, the 2nd edition of this widely-used text provides an up-to-date assessment of Scottish politics under Blair and the likely impact of the new Scottish Parliament. The book focuses in particular on Scotland's constitutional position within the UK; its system of policy making; the nature of the Scottish economy; and the changing patterns of party electoral and grass roots politics. An important feature is its focus throughout on the relationship between culture, identity and ethnicity and that between politics and civil society as it has developed since the Act of Union in 1707.

Scotland: The Growing Divide is the follow-up to Scotland: The Road Divides, which was released in 2007 to significant media interest across the UK. A book ahead of its time, several of the conclusions and predictions in The Road Divides have now become a political reality. Five years on, and now facing a referendum on Scottish independence in autumn 2014, the authors focus on the changing face of politics and what that means for both Scotland and the UK. With a thorough discussion of the arguments reaching several provocative conclusions, this is a must-read for anyone with an interest in the future of this country. REVIEWS: As a response to the 'national conversation' initiated by Salmond this is an important book, and coming from a former Labour heavyweight it is, in its way, remarkable. It virtually concedes that the party that has dominated Scottish politics for the past 30 years, has lost its way, and that the old ideologies no longer count. THE TIMES[McLeish] has emerged as an advocate of a much bolder approach to devolution than many in his party seem ready for. EDINBURGH EVENING NEWS They are particularly scathing of Westminster's response to the debate... The authors note that the initial response was to point out that Westminster could take back powers from Holyrood. THE HERALD

Culture Nation And The New Scottish Parliament written by Caroline McCracken-Flesher and has been published by Bucknell University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007 with History categories.

Culture, Nation, and the New Scottish Parliament asserts that while Scotland's new Parliament (1999) is a creation of laws, politics, and economics, some of the forces underpinning it are cultural, therefore constantly alive and insistently creative. Scotland may not be confined by, but has always lived within and moved forward and outward, through its signs and stories. In the moment of the new Parliament, it is time to cast up Scotland's accounts of past and present, and to review the nation's futures. Readers will find the usual signs of Scotland foregrounded, questioned, and re-energized as contributors trace the dynamic toward a Scottish Parliament. And they will find new signs, whether sounds, sights, or souvenirs come into play, revealing today's performance of a dynamic Scotland. Caroline McCracken-Flesher teaches the novel, the British eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, Scottish literature, and literary theory at the University of Wyoming.
