Teaching Safer Sex may be the most important contribution the CFLE has made to the pedagogy of sexuality education. It was 1988 when most HIV/AIDS education was about epidemiology and the function of T-cells that the CFLE created its groundbreaking first edition of Teaching Safer Sex. Ten years later, many of the innovative strategies from that manual were classics in the field and had been incorporated into hundreds of curricula that aimed to develop the motivation, knowledge, comfort and skills essential for safer sex behaviors. It was time for a second edition, and The NEW Teaching Safer Sex aimed to expand the scope of safer sex education to include the social context of people's sexual behavior. Paulo Freire's ideas put forward in The Pedagogy of the Oppressed were important in the development of the new manual, which recognized that in a society so dangerously ambivalent about teaching its young people about their sexual safety, they needed to learn about the powerful societal, as well as personal, barriers to healthy sexual behavior. Twenty lessons were designed to promote critical consciousness about social messages as well to create a climate where communication about sexuality is normal and the use of safer sex is the expected behavior.

The attitudes, thinking, and policies in European countries where the teen pregnancy rates are much lower than those in the United States are examined in this plea for domestic societal change. Research in the Netherlands, France, and Germany found that nonjudgmental attitudes, access to safer sex practices, and comprehensive sex education are the norm. This book looks to European principles and proposes that the United States put aside philosophical and religious differences and work together to protect teens from early, unwanted pregnancy and sexually transmitted disease. Topics covered include family values, the influence of the media, AIDS and STDs, contraception, abstinence, sex education, abortion, and religion. This book is geared toward teen providers, teachers, religious leaders, politicians, public health officials, medical providers, and parents—in short, anyone who has respect for teens and their ability, with appropriate and honest guidance, to make responsible decisions.

With 32 contributions from 12 countries it definitively traces the landscape of issues, theories and practices in sexuality education globally. These rich and multidisciplinary essays are written by renowned critical sexualities studies experts and rising stars in this area and grouped under four main areas: Global Assemblages of Sexuality Education Sexualities Education in Schools Sexual Cultures, Entertainment Media and Communication Technologies Re-animating What Else Sexuality Education Research Can Do, Be and Become Importantly, this Handbook does not equate sexuality education with safer sex education nor understand this subject as confined to school based programmes. Instead, sexuality education is understood more broadly and to occur in spaces as diverse as community settings and entertainment media, and via communication technologies. It is an essential and comprehensive reference resource for academics, students and researchers of sexuality education that both demarcates the field and stimulates critical discussion of its edges.
