The Ten Commandments were not meant for the times of the prophet Moses nor the times of the Old Testament, but were rather addressed to every generation, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law (Matt. 5:18). Through Christianity, the Ten Commandments were given a new meaning which coincided with the new standards understood by the believers in the New Testament. So the Commandments remain the same but their concept widens as God grants with His grace an opportunity for meditation. How true then was the prophet David when he said, "I have seen the consummation of all perfection, But Your commandment is exceedingly broad." (Ps. 119:96). In the course of his studies of the Bible, the author of course also analyzed the Ten Commandments and came across a number of inconsistencies. On closer inspection it became clear that the classic Ten Commandments of the Bible do not meet the requirements that are made of universal ethics. They are absolutely sexist, xenophobic, unbalanced, and not shaped by the all-encompassing "divine love" that is always emphasized by the church. Based on this realization that the biblical Ten Commandments were inadequate, the idea arose to design a new, comprehensive and balanced version of the Ten Commandments for all people of all faiths, but also for non-denominational and so-called unbelievers. He did not formulate his commandments either as an exclusive invitation "You should ..." or as a prohibition "You should not ...", because people living together in society are much more differentiated than being divided into "good and evil" deeds, nor regulate them with "do's and don'ts". His commandments are calls for each individual to be aware of the effects of what he is doing. That is why he prefers to call them "mindfulnesses". He deliberately formulated the new commandments very briefly and concisely so that they are easy to remember and can be applied as far as possible.

At the heart of the Exodus is a recitation of the Decalogue, a contract between Yahweh and Israel that inscribes Israel into the fabric of human societies while emphasizing its uniqueness through Yahweh. According to the demands of the Decalogue, manhood entails the avoidance of stealing, killing, and coveting, not to mention apostasy and violation of the Sabbath and other mens property. What, then, would be the essence of womanhood, if different? Is there an exclusion of women from active participation in the Sinaitic theophany and, consequently, from active sharing of responsibility and identity? How ethically normative are the Ten Commandments? And, in terms of the present study, how gender specific are they? This study reclaims the encoded voice of womanhood, or rather the code of women as one crucial key for comprehending the ancient Israelite mind. By selecting female characters narratives as interpretative clues for the law, this book presents a reading of the Decalogue at three levels: legal, behavioral and representational.
