The New York City Photo League is known by scholars more for its existence as a group than for individual photographers who learned and worked with the group. Although League photographers followed divergent paths after the group's disbandment in 1951, during the 1930s and 1940s, when the League was most active, the emphasis was on the group, seen most obviously in the feature groups, which collected League photographers to document New York City's neighborhoods. Through interviews with scholars and curators who have worked with the League as a subject for research and exhibitions, this study examines the group as a case study for influence. By identifying the main concerns the Photo League wanted to communicate through its leading photographers and most important images, it is possible to begin to discern where the influence of the League can be seen in the work of modern photographers.
