“Breaks new ground in its examination of the role of newspaper reporting during the police hunt for the first notorious serial killer.”—Reviews in History Press coverage of the 1888 mutilation murders attributed to Jack the Ripper was of necessity filled with gaps and silences, for the killer remained unknown and Victorian journalists had little experience reporting serial murders and sex crimes. This engrossing book examines how fourteen London newspapers—dailies and weeklies, highbrow and lowbrow—presented the Ripper news, in the process revealing much about the social, political, and sexual anxieties of late Victorian Britain and the role of journalists in reinforcing social norms. L. Perry Curtis surveys the mass newspaper culture of the era, delving into the nature of sensationalism and the conventions of domestic murder news. Analyzing the fourteen newspapers—two of which emanated from the East End, where the murders took place—he shows how journalists played on the fears of readers about law and order by dwelling on lethal violence rather than sex, offering gruesome details about knife injuries but often withholding some of the more intimate details of the pelvic mutilations. He also considers how the Ripper news affected public perceptions of social conditions in Whitechapel. “The apparently motiveless violence of the Whitechapel killings denied journalists a structure, and it is the resulting creativity in news reporting that L Perry Curtis Jr describes. His impressive book makes a genuine contribution to 19th-century history in a way that books addressing the banal question of the identity of the Ripper do not.”—The Guardian

In this work I am not attempting to give an indepth analysis of the Whitechapel killings, there are many experts far more knowledgeable on the subject than myself, who have produced excellent historical works detailing facts and joining the pieces of this puzzle in an attempt to discover the identity of Jack the Ripper. What I have done is reproduce, in chronological order, news articles from three leading London newspapers, each of which thoroughly covered the investigations of the slayings from its particular political and social point of view. Because of some obscurities in the text due to the evolution of the English language over the last century and a quarter, I have added explanatory footnotes identifying people and defining slang words, phrases and technical terms that are no longer commonly used. For this purpose I have consulted various Victorian Era dictionaries, histories, newspapers, magazines, encyclopaedias, government sources and works of literature. I have also utilized modern sources concentrating on the Whitechapel killings and Victorian society in general.

"Emma Smith and Martha Tabram were once considered the first victims of Jack the Ripper. Accepted wisdom changed over time and they're now little more than footnotes to the Ripper mystery. But could it be that these early murders are in fact the key to unlocking the secret history of the Whitechapel murders? With new evidence and a fresh evaluation of the facts, we now find ourselves closer than ever to the answers that have eluded historians and criminologists for well over a century."-- From back cover.

A collection of four horror novels by Doug Lamoreux, now in one volume! Saucy Jacky: Come into the East End of London, England, in the year 1888. Walk through the streets of Whitechapel and slums of Spitalfields, side by side with history's most notorious serial killer. Overhear his plans, and listen - or try not to - to his secret thoughts as he waits in the shadows. Keep pace, if you have the nerve, as he stalks his victims. Watch, if you have the stomach, as he commits his outrages. Run with him, if you're still upright, as he escapes the swarming forces of police desperate for his hide and head. These are the Whitechapel murders, as told by Jack the Ripper himself. The Devil's Bed: While touring a ruined castle in France, Brandy Petracus is led to the unhallowed graveyard of Templar knights executed for practicing black magic. Long forgotten by the world, this ancient cemetery is known to the locals as the Devil's Bed, and its occupants do not rest in peace. Brandy soon finds herself the leader of an eclectic group besieged by resurrected Templar knights - craving their blood. Vampirism, madness, dark humor and flashbacks to 14th century Paris tell Brandy's story of commitment, trust and sacrifice, as she is forced to hole up in an ancient chapel with her friends and fight for survival. Even then, the Devil's Bed has yet to surrender all of its secrets. The Melting Dead: Everything they grab catches fire. Everyone they touch dies. Everything they kill comes back from the dead. A secluded Mississippi River island is the perfect vacation getaway... until the space rocks land. An innocent family is killed by searing radiation. That same cosmic force returns Dad, sis, and the two boys from the grave. But they're deteriorating quickly; melting away. Only flesh and blood can save them. Oh, look. Here come the tourists! It's a B-movie between book covers; a roller-coaster ride of terror to burst your heart with fear and make your sides ache with laughter. It begins with a mysterious house explosion, a severely burned man, and an unidentified female body. More victims follow, each killed under the oddest circumstances, each bearing an identical but unidentified wound, each attack accompanied by the most eerie, musical ticking. When the lead homicide investigator goes missing, Police Sergeant Erin Vanderjagt is forced into the fray and into a personal hell she could have never imagined. But what can Erin do, where can she go, how can she fight the horror... When The Tik-Tik Sings?

Difficult Death Dying And The Dead In Media And Culture written by Sharon Coleclough and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-11-25 with Social Science categories.

This book responds to a growing interest in death, dying and the dead within and beyond the field of death studies. The collection defines an understanding of ‘difficult death’ and examines the differences between death, dying and the dead, as well as exploring the ethical challenges of researching death in mediated form. The collection is attendant to the ways in which difficult deaths are imbricated in power structures both before and after they become mediatised in culture. As such, the work navigates the many political and social complexities and inequalities – what might be deemed the difficulties – of death, dying and the dead. The book seeks to expand understandings of the difficulty of death in media and culture through a wide range of chapters from different contexts focused on literature, film, television, and in online environments, as well as several chapters examining news reportage of difficult deaths.
