Foreword by Shane Ross "As Ireland looks to regroup and rebuild for the future, this is exactly the type of book the country needs, with new people and new ideas." Peter Sutherland, former EU Commissioner and Director General of GATT and the WTO "Every crisis presents an opportunity and Ireland’s current crisis gives us an opportunity to reshape the country, to make it future-proof. Next Generation Ireland contains some fascinating ideas by some of Ireland's brightest young thinkers on how to build the Ireland of the 2020s and 2030s." David McWilliams, economist and author Ireland in the early 2010s stands at a crossroads. The ongoing change and crisis in institutions that once had our trust force us to ask, "What now?" Next Generation Ireland brings together ten young Irish men and women to answer this very question. All are under forty and are emerging experts in their chosen fields. They have come together because they believe that, in this time of questioning, there exists a huge opportunity for the next generation to build the Ireland of the 2020s and 2030s.The book tackles the essential challenges confronting Irish politics and society, the economy, the environment, and Ireland’s relationship with the rest of the world. "The Media Welfare State: Nordic Media in the Digital Age" is the first theoretically driven book to comprehensively address the central dynamics of the digitalization of the media industry in the Nordic countries--Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, and Iceland--and the ways media organizations there are transforming themselves to address the new digital environment. The authors address Nordic media industry structure and content from the standpoint of scholarly perspectives on global, regional, and local approaches to media development. Taking a comparative approach, they provide an overview of media institutions and policy throughout the region, focusing on the impact of Information and Communication Technology/Internet, and digitalization on the Nordic media sector. Illustrating the shifting media landscape in these countries, the authors draw on a wide range of cases, including developments in television, radio, the press, and the public service media institution.

In recent years an extensive range of new research has been revisiting the topic of the location of international business activities, from a variety of different perspectives and background interests. This work has been inspired in part by two apparently quite different but actually related contemporary trends: on the one hand, an emergence or revitalization of clusters of activities co-located in or around selected global city regions or fast growing metropolitan areas; and on the other hand, an increased global dispersion of activities conducted within the value chains managed or coordinated by many large multinational enterprises and their business partners. The former trend has given rise to discussions of how the elite of the cultural-cognitive economy of the 21st century (in Allen Scott's terminology) or the creative class (Richard Florida's term) are now being drawn or brought back to major urban centers; while the latter trend is associated with debates over outsourcing, and the economic and social consequences of shifts in the ownership and location of distinct nodes of value chains once production systems become more fragmented and the component parts of such systems become more geographically dispersed. An increased interest in the subject of international business location has been shown by scholars in Strategic Management, in Economic Geography, and in Regional Science, as well as in our own interdisciplinary field of International Business Studies. However, as is often the case in academic research communities, these bodies of scholarship have tended to develop at something of a distance from one another, each conversing internally more than they have with one another. Location of International Business Activities aims to promote a greater conversation between those interested in the topic of Location from various different backgrounds or starting points. The articles are taken from a special issue on the theme of the Multinational in Geographic Space which was published by The Journal of International Business Studies in 2013.

The Digital Transformation Of Georgia written by Martin Kupiek and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-04-28 with Business & Economics categories.

This edited volume discusses the path towards the digital transformation of Georgia from two major viewpoints: First, an economic perspective that includes contributions around economic integration and orientation towards the EU, and an analysis of its implications for a small country like Georgia. Second, various aspects of digital transformation initiatives will be studied from an enterprise and a managerial perspective. In this part, innovative management methodologies are conceptualized such as agile change management and the enterprise transformation cycle to facilitate the shift from the manufacturing and agriculture industry towards an increasing digitalization of companies. These concepts serve as fundamental cornerstones to enable the development of a digital transformation roadmap including the analysis of the potential of establishing a digital hub in Georgia and the Caucasus area. Based on a survey of national and international managers, important HR key performance indicators referring to mobility and digitalization of the workplace are discussed. The impact of pandemic (post-Covid) scenarios for future organizational development as well as large-scale labor migration from East to West is also in focus. The authors present implications for policymakers and business owners as well as top-level executives resulting in a set of recommendations for future actions.

Corporate Catalyst written by Tony Griffiths and has been published by John Wiley & Sons this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-08-02 with Business & Economics categories.

An inside look at the real business world In Corporate Catalyst, Tony Griffiths gives readers a ringside seat on the many boardroom and corporate battles that he both fought and witnessed through the nearly six decades of his productive and colorful career. Among other stories, Griffiths replays his two stints as the CEO of Canada's darling of the telecom industry, Mitel Corporation. The first was in the late 1980s, a time when he helped staunch the flow of red ink and returned the company to profitability. The second was in the early 1990s, when he steered the company through its majority ownership by British Telecom and then its sale to Schroder Ventures. As Griffiths relates it, he had to learn how to deal with the bureaucratic style of the former and the power-hungry moves of the latter. Corporate Catalyst includes the author's blow-by-blow account of what went on inside Confederation Life in the 1980s and early 1990s—a story that should have prevented the failure of the likes of Lehman Brothers in the recent Great Recession. Griffiths, who had his hands full at the time with challenges at Mitel, also sat on Confed's board. He tried to warn Confederation Life's executives and his fellow board members of the financial dangers the company was facing. No one but a few other board members would listen-and even they did not do so consistently. The fall of Confed Life became one of the largest failures of a major finance company in corporate history. Griffiths takes the reader on a dramatic tour of the trickery, betrayal, and politicking that the world of business seems to attract. He introduces readers to the biggest and boldest names in Canadian business, including Jake Moore of Brascan, Robert Campeau of Campeau Corporation, Terry Mathews of Mitel, Ted Rogers of Rogers Communications, Conrad Black of Hollinger, Adam Zimmerman of Noranda, Pat Burns of Confederation Life, and Christopher Ondaatje of The Ondaatje Corporation. In the book's many cautionary tales, Griffiths warns against mixing the roles of governance and management and shows the marked tendency of executives to take up residence far from reality when times get tough. "We don't listen. We don't plan. We don't act," he wrote in frustration to the board and management of Confederation Life after months of trying to get someone to address the financial mess they were in. Full of hard-won wisdom, Corporate Catalyst is a must-read for anyone working in business or interested in what the business world is really like.

The Silicon Empire written by Michael B. Likosky and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-01-18 with Law categories.

Michael Likosky examines the continuities and discontinuities between colonial and present-day high tech transnational legal orders. His concern is specifically with the colonial characteristics of the legal order which underpins the global high tech economy. He distinguishes the democratic and human rights rhetoric of this economy from a reality wherein the legal order is often used to reproduce colonial-type relationships. Just as in the colonial period, the expansion of trans-border commerce overlaps with democratic demands and human rights in complex, multifaceted and paradoxical ways. Through a case study looking at Malaysia's Multimedia Super Corridor, a high tech national development plan and foreign direct investment scheme, he examines how the transnational leaders of the high tech economy along with the Malaysian political elite react when human rights problems threaten to derail commercial plans.
