Beyond Nato written by Michael E. O'Hanlon and has been published by Brookings Institution Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-08-15 with Political Science categories.

In this new Brookings Marshall Paper, Michael O'Hanlon argues that now is the time for Western nations to negotiate a new security architecture for neutral countries in eastern Europe to stabilize the region and reduce the risks of war with Russia. He believes NATO expansion has gone far enough. The core concept of this new security architecture would be one of permanent neutrality. The countries in question collectively make a broken-up arc, from Europe's far north to its south: Finland and Sweden; Ukraine, Moldova, and Belarus; Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan; and finally Cyprus plus Serbia, as well as possibly several other Balkan states. Discussion on the new framework should begin within NATO, followed by deliberation with the neutral countries themselves, and then formal negotiations with Russia. The new security architecture would require that Russia, like NATO, commit to help uphold the security of Ukraine, Georgia, Moldova, and other states in the region. Russia would have to withdraw its troops from those countries in a verifiable manner; after that, corresponding sanctions on Russia would be lifted. The neutral countries would retain their rights to participate in multilateral security operations on a scale comparable to what has been the case in the past, including even those operations that might be led by NATO. They could think of and describe themselves as Western states (or anything else, for that matter). If the European Union and they so wished in the future, they could join the EU. They would have complete sovereignty and self-determination in every sense of the word. But NATO would decide not to invite them into the alliance as members. Ideally, these nations would endorse and promote this concept themselves as a more practical way to ensure their security than the current situation or any other plausible alternative.

Nine Days To Oder written by Philip W. Handley and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1980 with Military geography categories.

The basic question is whether it is possible to develop an alternate NATO strategy in Central Region, Europe, that will lead to the decisive defeat of Pact forces without the use of nuclear weapons. The study examines the strategic objectives of the Soviet Union in Western Europe, develops a scenario for the achievement of these objectives in the year 1983, and then examines the vulnerabilities of the Pact positions, deployment and operational tactics. The study concludes that the Pact flanks are assailable and then proceeds to develop a nine day combined ground, air and naval campaign that will destroy the first and second echelon forces in Czechoslovakia, Poland and East Germany. In addition to the organization, combined arms operations and ground logistics associated with the proposed campaign, current force and equipment shortages are identified together with their incremental costs. The study concludes that a Pact attack in 1983 can be defeated if certain changes are made in the numbers, organization and disposition of US forces. The identified incremental costs involve a 2.8 to 3.5 percent increase in the Department of Defense budgets for the FY 1981 through 1983. (Author).

What S Wrong With Nato And How To Fix It written by Mark Webber and has been published by John Wiley & Sons this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-03-16 with Political Science categories.

NATO, the most successful alliance in history, is beset by unresolved tensions and divergent interests that are undermining its cohesion, credibility and capability. In this new book, Mark Webber, James Sperling and Martin Smith explore four key post-Cold War developments that threaten NATO's survival: an overextended geostrategic reach and an unwieldly security policy portfolio; a failure to address capability short-falls and meet defence spending benchmarks; US weariness and European wariness that call NATO into question; and intra-alliance discord over Russia’s place in the European security order and how to deal with Moscow’s destabilization of Georgia and Ukraine. The authors propose in response a range of policy options that could reinvigorate NATO, but conclude with a note of caution. Alliances come and go and most are cast into the dustbin of history. If NATO is to avoid this fate, it must not only address the major problems that trouble it, but also get to grips with future challenges to alliance cohesion and credibility, from Brexit to the emerging contest with China.
