Excerpt from The Normal Herald, Vol. 17: April, 1911 As in the last contest, eminent men had been secured for judges, and no one seemed disposed to question their ability to decide the various numbers on their merits. For almost an hour before the contest began the Chapel rang with the songs and yells of the supporters of the red and the blue. Both sides were equipped with canes, to which streamers of ribbon were attached; on the one side, the bright red, and on the other a sea of blue. Excerpt from The Normal Herald, Vol. 17: January, 1911 It will be interesting to the old students to learn that Miss May A. Davis, SO long in charge of the culinary department of our school, has returned to her Old place and is making it homelike for us all. Meredith Riddle, '05, and a graduate Of 1911, Wellesley, is taking a year of rest, which, after so many years of study, she needs and deserves. She is spending the year with her aunt, Mrs. Kir kendall, in Spokane, Washington. A recent Spokane newspaper gives her picture with a flattering notice Of her social success in that city. The Old South steps are gone. Their tumbling down days are over. The place where they stood is now filled by a fine cement stairway and porch with artistic lights. Charlotte E. Harr, '89, has a beautiful home in Moran, Kan sas, and three fine boys to adorn it. Her husband is C. C. Thomas, postmaster and editor in this prosperous Kansas town. We want to quote her as an example for others in writing us to have her address properly placed in the catalogue, and the herald sent. A recent visitor, after her return home has written us: I knew, she says, before I went to Indiana that you had made many and great changes in the school, but I had no comprehension of it until I saw for myself. Everything is so beautiful to look upon, and so comfortable that I cannot avoid wishing that I could turn the years backward and be an Indiana school girl again. Excerpt from The Normal Herald, Vol. 17: April, 1912 The teacher at Indiana enjoys a freedom from interference and unnecessary red-tape which few teachers in America enjoy. America, the land of freedom, is not a land of freedom for the teacher. Experience has taught, however, that only by giving teachers free dom, their selection having been carefully done, and calling for results, can the best be secured. Germany has learned this lesson better than any other nation and Germany is the world's school master. The foregoing is trite, but it needs emphasis because neither the public nor our corps of teachers realize its full truth. Some of our teachers have had little experience outside the walls of this school and do not know what petty regulations are so often imposed on teachers by principals anxious to make a reputation for having a school which runs like a machine. As has been repeatedly shown, a school is not a machine, and the principal who tries to make a machine of it, wrecks it. Some teachers wrest this freedom to their own destruction, but the end result of the system of free dom is good.
