Sweet And Delectable written by Jacinto Octavio Picón and has been published by Bucknell University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2000 with Fiction categories.

"This translation makes available to the English-reading public another treatment of that most famous of Spanish literary creations: the Don Juan figure. This is a Don Juan in decline who will come to grips with his emptiness by learning to love. Picon's frank discussion of a description of the act of love was a daring undertaking in the Spain of the time, and perhaps led to his being dismissed - by some - as being "erotic," which was clearly meant to be pejorative. But he also introduced humor into Sweet and Delectable without taking away from the serious nature of his exploration of a love relationship, and with delightfully Cervantine chapter headings, a la Don Quixote de la Mancha, pokes fun where it needs to be poked while giving the reader a glimpse of things to come in a comic nutshell."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Striking Their Modern Pose written by Dorota Heneghan and has been published by Purdue University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-11-15 with Literary Criticism categories.

The importance of fashion in the construction and representation of gender and the formation of modern society in nineteenth-century Spanish narrative is the focus of Dorota Heneghan's Striking Their Modern Pose. The study moves beyond traditional interpretations that equate female passion for finery with symptoms of social ambition and the decline of the Spanish nation, and brings to light the manners in which nineteenth-century Spanish novelists drew attention to the connection between the complexities of fashionable female protagonists and the shifting limits of conventional womanhood to address the need to reformulate customary ideals of gender as a necessary condition for Spain to advance in the process of modernization. The project also sheds light on an area largely unexplored by previous studies: men's pursuit of fashion. Through the analysis of the richness of sartorial subtleties in Benito Pérez Galdós's and Emilia Pardo Bazán's portraits of their male characters, this book brings forward these writers' exposure of the much-denied bourgeois men's love for self-adornment and the incoherencies and contradictions in the allegedly monolithic, stable concept of nineteenth-century Spanish masculinity. While highlighting the ways in which the art of dressing smartly provided nineteenth-century Spanish novelists with effective means to voice their critique of conventional gender order, the book also lends insight into these authors' methods of manipulating sartorial signs to explore and to envision (as in the case of Pardo Bazán and Jacinto Octavio Picón) alternative models of masculinity and femininity. Threading through all chapters of the study is the idea propagated by all three of these writers that Spain's full integration into modernity required not only the redefinition of the feminine role, but the reconfiguration of the masculine one as well.

Conflicts And Conciliations written by Geoffrey Ribbans and has been published by Purdue University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1997 with categories.

Between 1881 and 1897, Benito P rez Gald s, generally acknowledged as Spain's greatest nineteenth-century novelist, composed some twenty "contemporary" novels, which Geoffrey Ribbans characterizes as the peak of his achievement. This monumental study traces the evolution of the many strands that make up one of them: the long and complex novel Fortunata y Jacinta. Ribbans examines the various stages of composition, not only the earlier, reconstructed Alpha version but also subsequent revisions in the much corrected handwritten text and in the printer's galleys. He treats these tentative drafts as part of the process of reaching out toward the coherent definitive text. Ribbans's analysis of such devices as the ambiguous role of the narrator, the use of free indirect style and direct dialogue, and the construction of distinctive ideolects leads to the heart of his study, the development of Gald s's characters.

""Moral Divorce" and Other Stories is a collection of short stories by Jacinto Octavio Picon y Bouchet (1852-1923), a member of Spain's Generation of 1868. A bibliophile and a Francophile (his mother was French); a native of Madrid who loved Paris; a member of the Royal Spanish Academy (of the Spanish language) and the San Fernando Royal Academy of Fine Arts (he published a volume of art criticism entitled the Life and Works of Don Diego Velazquez); a novelist, short story writer, and journalist; a liberal (in politics, religion, social philosophy); a Spaniard steeped in his own literature (from Cervantes to Galdos) but knowledgeable about others; an aesthete whose appreciation of French cooking prompted Emilia Pardo Bazan (probably tongue in cheek) to provide a recipe for a "Jacinto Octavio Omelette" in her Modern Spanish Cuisine; a friend of literary greats of his time (Clarin, Galdos, Palacio Valdes, Pardo Bazan, Valera, etc.); and a loving father whose son's premature death at the age of forty nearly drove him to despair, Picon deserves to be read anew, for in his stories he deals with timeless and universal themes - freedom, justice, equality, compassion, suffering, love, and hope."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. "El enemigo" fue el ttulo con que se public otra novela anunciada por Jacinto Octavio Picnn llamada "La sotana".
