The obituary pages of our quality newspapers have been described as 'oases of calm in a world gone mad', 'a lovely part of the paper to linger in', and 'writing that matters'. Entertaining, inspiring and informative, they serve as a legitimate instrument of history, and have enjoyed an extraordinary revival in popularity over the past twenty years. Life After Death investigates-and celebrates-the development of the obituary form in the British, American, and Australian press. Author Nigel Starck tracks down the earliest exercise in obituary publication (in 1622), then traces the evolution of the form over four centuries, from times when the obituary was the reserve of royalty and privilege to its contemporary egalitarian mode. Along the way Dr Starck delves into a multitude of lives, from the heroic to the comic, the saintly to the downright villainous, the exemplary to the eccentric. Meet, in the posthumous cast list, Major Digby Tatham-Warter, of Britain's Parachute Regiment, who carried an umbrella into battle just in case it rained; the absent-minded Australian barrister Pat Lanigan, who drove from Canberra to Sydney and then flew back, leaving his car behind; and the eccentric American publisher Eddie Clontz, whose newspaper reported (exclusively, of course) that 'tiny terrorists' were disguising themselves as garden gnomes. Life After Death also incorporates a connoisseur's collection of ten obituaries reprinted in full: the subjects include Helen Keller, Diana Mosley, Quentin Crisp, George Wallace, and Rosa Parks. Without doubt, Life After Death is a book that will outlive its author-as an enduring celebration of journalism's dying art. 'Canon Smith expired after suffering an unfortunate disagreement with his bishop.'-The Sydney Morning Herald, 1882 'Minnesota Fats died at his home in Nashville. He was eighty-two, or perhaps ninety-five.'-The New York Times, 1996

A sophisticated and suspenseful novel about the poignant lives of two women living in different eras. On the day John F. Kennedy is inaugurated, Claire, an uncompromising young wife and mother obsessed with the glamour of Jackie O, struggles over the decision of whether to stay in a loveless marriage or follow the man she loves and whose baby she may be carrying. Decades earlier, in 1919, Vivien Lowe, an obituary writer, is searching for her lover who disappeared in the Great San Francisco Earthquake of 1906. By telling the stories of the dead, Vivien not only helps others cope with their grief but also begins to understand the devastation of her own terrible loss. The surprising connection between Claire and Vivien will change the life of one of them in unexpected and extraordinary ways. Part literary mystery and part love story, The Obituary Writer examines expectations of marriage and love, the roles of wives and mothers, and the emotions of grief, regret, and hope.

Shortlisted for the Grand Prix du livre de Montreal Rosine is surrounded by ghosts. Ghosts of family. Ghosts of past lovers. Ghosts of an old Montreal and its politics. Ghosts of the Montreal quarry workers who, in the 1880s, frequented the Crystal Palace gardens, upon whose ruins her Mile-End triplex sits. Her dead maternal family is there, too, with their restlessness, their stories, their forgotten indigenous ancestry, their little crimes and glories. There’s even the ghost of an ancient Parisian gendarme lurking in the dark stairwell, peering through her keyhole. Rosine herself may be a ghost, her voice splintered – sometimes a prurient fly buzzing over the action, sometimes a politically correct historian, a woman perpetually travelling on a bus or lying in bed – and so too is our understanding of narrative. In offering up a kaleidoscopic view of Rosine and her city, The Obituary fractures our expectations of what a novel should be ‐ allowing the history of assimilation, so violent in the West and so often sidelined by the French–English conflicts of Montreal, to burble up and infect the very language we use. Though a mystery, possibly involving murder, The Obituary is less a whodunnit than an investigation of who speaks when we speak. ‘A beautiful, challenging poetic novel that is absolutely stunning.’ – Vallum ‘Even the understatements are compelling … though [Scott] balks at being called experimental, this ain’t your grandmother’s etcetera.’ – Globe and Mail ‘The Obituary pushes narrative into uncharted territory. The text possesses a brilliant essence of time, place and flight that pulls the reader in, holds them close and urges them to read between the lines, the impressions, the moments.’ – Matrix Magazine

Something just didn't seem right when Wallace McRae got word in the middle of the night that an eminent chemist he'd just interviewed had taken his own life by slashing his wrists with a straight razor in his bath tub.McRae's job, which he'd been forced to take after getting fired for drinking, was to prepare obituaries of famous, older people so his new employer, dead.com, could respond to a person's death with a quick story, ideally full of dirt and rumors that would attract online viewers - and advertising. His odious boss's motto on how far to go in writing an obituary was: "You can't libel a dead man."Taking the job was a Faustian bargain. McRae, known to all as just Mack, had traded his skills as a prize-winning investigative reporter for health insurance that covered the mounting medical bills of his dying wife.Mack had often interviewed the dead chemist, who was obsessed with winning the Nob el Prize for his breakthrough work on obesity and dementia. As he told his boss the night he got the news of the man's death: "He didn't have a suicidal bone in his body."Intrigued, his boss ordered him to dig into the matter, mostly because he saw the possibility of millions of eyeballs coming to his obituary website to read a juicy, viral story. Mack saw something different: a chance to redeem himself with a legitimate scoop that showed the man's official suicide had been something more sinister. As he would find, others with a huge financial interest in the true story were willing to resort to threats and even murder to muzzle Mack before he could print the truth.

This thesis project explores the move structure of the Western obituary genre, the genre's constraints, and identity construction within the obituary genre. Using Swales's (1990) approach to genre theory, this thesis defines the move structure of the obituary genre using three sub-corpora of obituaries from three Western cultures: British, American and Australian. In addition, this thesis discusses the generic constraint that the obituary subject should be presented only in a positive manner, so as to construct a positive identity for the deceased; therefore, identity theory is also a major focus of this thesis. Moore (2002) has acknowledged the common notion that only positive information regarding the deceased should be included in an obituary, but through an examination of lexical choice conveying negativity and adversative conjunctions, it is apparent that negative information is, according to the corpus, more often than not included in obituaries. The presence of negative information in the obituary genre has not been studied, until now. This thesis project uses positioning theory, specifically predication and quotation as described by Moita-Lopes (2006) in order to determine the purpose of the negative information in a genre that seems to only allow positive information.
