Excerpt from The Ocean of Story, Vol. 8 of 10: Being C. H. Tawney's Translation of Somadeva's Katha Sarit Sagara (or Ocean of Streams of Story) It is a high honour but also something of an embarrassment to an amateur to be invited to figure among the distinguished specialists who have contributed introductions to the previous volumes of this great edition, in which Mr Penzer's learning continues to enliven and illuminate fold after sinuous fold of one of the world's great story-books. My friend Professor Rand not long ago delighted a large audience by denning a specialist as "the man who knows more and more about less and less," and it is certainly the experience of one whose special studies lie mainly in another direction that it is not easy to keep abreast of the increasing literature of his hobbies. Nor perhaps does the eighth volume particularly lend itself to an introduction by a student of marchen. It is a good deal taken up with what may rather be called epic themes of the warfare of gods and supernatural beings, which are interesting mainly from the literary point of view. How differently, it strikes the reader, would either Homer, Milton or Wagner have managed these contests, and to Western taste how marred is the interest of the Indian narrative by Oriental hyperbole and the too convenient recourse to magical powers and reincarnations for resolving tragic knots. This contrast indeed raises not uninteresting matters of literary aesthetic. I can remember suffering similar disillusionment when as a boy I stumbled upon Ellis's Specimens of the Early English Romances and learned how magical sources of prowess could blunt the edge of heroic exploits. Excerpt from The Ocean of Story, Vol. 3 of 10: Being C. H. Tawney's Translation of Somadeva's Kath Sarit S gara (or Ocean of Streams of Story); Now Edited With Introduction, Fresh Expalanatory Notes and Terminal Essay It is with great diffidence that i venture to step in where the great masters of Indian scholarship found some difficulty to tread. It is a heavy task to follow in the wake of men like Sir Richard Temple and Sir George Grierson, to whom Sanskrit literature is an open book, but turning the leaves I found they had left some blank pages, and on these I shall endeavour to put down some of the thoughts which this new edition of Tawney's translation of Somadeva's great work has suggested to me. I am encouraged to undertake this work owing to the kind invitation with which Mr Penzer has honoured me, and by whom I have been granted the privilege of appreciating to the full the excellent work which he is performing in producing his magnum opus. By his illuminating notes, and by the extensive treatment of some motifs found in this collection, he has carried his investigations far beyond the narrow borders of the original home of the Katha Sarit Sagara. With immense industry and keen insight he has been able to accumulate a mass of literary parallels from all parts of the world which gives to this edition a value of its own, and places it in the forefront of modern studies in comparative literature. It is from this point of view that I will address myself to the task thus placed before me. Many a problem arises from the contemplation of this Indian literature in its relation to the other literatures of a similar kind. In the first place, the students of folk-lore are returning again to the question as to whether the inland lake of Indian tales was the ocean which overflowed its banks and carried these tales on the crest of its waves to distant lands and many nations. Ever since Benfey published his famous introduction to the German translation of the Panchatantra - and here I fully re-echo Mr Penzer's desideratum for an English translation brought up to date - this question has never ceased to agitate the mind of scholars. Excerpt from The Ocean of Story, Vol. 9 of 10: Being C. H. Tawney's Translation of Somadeva's Katha Sarit Sagara (or Ocean of Streams of Story) Now Edited With Introduction, Fresh, Explanatory Notes and Terminal Essay The printing-press and the spread of primary education are affecting the demand for the services of the Kathak, but we can well imagine how extensive his influence was in mediaeval India. It will also be recognised that the art of the Kathak must have been largely responsible for the main tenance of a literary standard in the vernacular, and for the gradual development of a vigorous literature in languages such as, Hindi, Bengali and Guzerati. In the earlier centuries of the Christian era the epics and the stories were mostly enshrined in Sanskrit, but the Kathak had to relate them to his audience in the spoken language. It is not difficult therefore to realise that powerful influences were at work for the preservation, in a written form of the vernacular, of works which were previously accessible in a language understood only by a very small minority of the people. Perhaps some explanation may be found in these circumstances of the tradition embodied in Somadeva's recension of the Katha sarit-sdgara that Gunadhya had originally written out his collection of the stories in the Pais'achi dialect.
