The Odyssey is an epic poem that tells the story of Odysseus, king of Ithaca, and his ten-year journey home after the Trojan War. The poem was performed orally by an aoidos or rhapsode and was more likely to be heard than read. The narrative significance of certain groups in the poem, such as women and slaves, is still reflected on by scholars.
