Excerpt from The Central Law Journal, 1874, Vol. 1 We think that Judge Paschal has, in these books, done a work of which he may be justly proud. We think it no exaggeration to say that his first volume stands unrivalled among the American codes. It possesses more elements of usefulness than any book of the kind we have ever had occa sion to use. Nothing is more perplexing to the practitioner, than a body of statute law built upon the basis of a highly refined and cultivated analysis, like that of Blackstone's Commentaries. Add to this the entire absence of cross-references, and the poor indexes which characterize many of the codes, and the difficulties of using them become almost insurmountable. Judge Paschal has wisely arranged his titles alphabetically, and has kept up a thorough system of polyglot references between kindred subjects, so as almost to dispense with the necessity of an index. Excerpt from Mississippi Law Journal, Vol. 12: December, 1939 I will tell you where I will stop: I will stop wherever any visible inconvenience doth appear; for the just bounds of a fee-simple upon a fee-simple are not yet' determined, but the first inconvenience that ariseth upon it will regu late it. So spoke Lord Nottingham in the Duke of Norfolk's Case1 two hundred and fifty years ago when he decided that no public policy forbade limiting a term on a term within the space of a life in being. In the period since Lord Nottingham's decision com mon' law courts have examined many limitations in a search for such visible inconveniences as the learned Lord Chancellor had in mind. Some dispositive provisions have been held to violate sound public policy and others have been upheld in the belief that they were not dangerous. What is today known as the Rule against Perpetuities is but a synthesis of such decisions. However, with the emergence of the Rule there has been a change Of emphasis. Courts no longer find it necessary to feel their way along as did Lord Nottingham: limitations are not tested to see whether they violate broad considerations of public policy. Particularized con siderations have given way to the single question of whether the Rule against Perpetuities is violated. John Chipman Gray spoke strongly as a champion of this codification. Excerpt from The American Law School Review, Vol. 3: An Intercollegiate Law Journal; November, 1911 The law is a system of rules evolved by society and evolving with the alteration of ao clety. The rules are not hard and fast and clear-cut, for they are rules applied and to be applied to the facts of real life, facts varying both apparently and actually. Our knowledge of these rules tends to become static. The rules themselves seldom do. Almost every rule has a future growth, as well as a past development. A most vain able phase of legal lore to be imparted to a student of any rule of law is its dynamic force. What is the trend of its development? What is the law of the future? The future, of course, is always beginning with the com ing moment. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
