This new book is a remarkable and moving account of life on the home front in Manchester during the Second World War. Based on transcripts of recorded interviews with senior civilians and former members of the Armed Services, this is an invaluable first-hand record of what it was like to live under the shadow of war. The everyday hardships and heroism are recalled: the Blitz, rationing, the Home Guard, evacuees, war work, and the American presence prior to D-Day. Despite all the tragedy and difficulties, the Mancunian spirit shines through with frequent dashes of unquenchable humour. Richly illustrated, and filled with true narratives of the courage and unbreakable spirit of the people of Manchester during those tumultuous years, this book looks at how the city fared during the Second World War, played her part in victory, and how the day-to-day life of her people was affected.

With nearly 2,200 citations, this bibliography covers every aspect of the history of alcohol in the British Isles from types of beverages and industries to medicine, politics, and critics. Sources cited range from a 1770 study to 1996 titles and include works written by historians, sociologists, political scientists, anthropologists, and archaeologists. In addition to books and articles, the volume lists unpublished manuscripts, essays in edited works, Ph.D. dissertations, and M.A. theses. Annotations provide information about a work's thesis or theme, use of primary materials, relationship to other studies, and also give a critical evaluation and the location of rare materials. Though scholarly studies form the core of the book, works that use some primary sources such as autobiographies, diaries and memoirs are also included. The material is arranged topically. Initial chapters are devoted to specific beverages, including beer, wine, whisky, and cider, and the malt and hops industries. Chapters then cover key subjects such as advertising, consumption trends, science and technology, politics, drinking establishments, regulation, crime, medicine, tokens, inn signs, temperance, and guilds. The final chapter identifies works on or by key figures, starting with biographies.

In 1940, the Manchester and Salford Blitz saw the city and its surroundings targeted by the German Luftwaffe. The most destructive attack was launched in late December 1940; it is remembered today as 'the Christmas Blitz'. Nearly 800 people lost their lives, and thousands more were injured, in two nights of raids ending with a devastating Christmas Eve that saw hundreds of tons of high explosive and thousands of incendiaries fall. Attacks continued into 1941 and beyond, and landmarks such as the cathedral, the Free Trade Hall, the Royal Infirmary and the Royal Exchange were all to suffer. At Old Trafford, too, a bomb wrecked the pitch and demolished the stands. This 75th anniversary narrative, based on first-hand accounts and extensive research, tells the story of how the people of Manchester, Salford, Trafford Park and Stretford endured this dark period in their history – a tale of courage, sacrifice, loss and the unconquerable power of the human spirit. Richly illustrated with contemporary photographs and documents, some of which have never been published before, this book is a valuable addition to the history of Manchester and Salford.

Irish family history is not easy to pursue. This book took the author many years following the journey of his family from County Roscommon at the time of the Great Famine in the 1840s. They settled in Lancashire, became part of the Irish in Britain, while working as plasterers, house painters, and cotton weavers. We discover where they lived, how much they earnt, and how much rent they paid. As they assimilated into British society in the last century family members contributed in both world wars. In the Second World War we follow the fortunes of three cousins in each of the three services. The family name _ OÍCadhain in Irish _ translates as ïwildgooseÍ. Their roaming continued after 1945 with further migrations to Canada. As we discover from what happened to this one family of famine migrants there are plenty of surprises along the way.

A thrilling account of the events surrounding the execution of three Fenians known as the Manchester Martyrs. Their execution during a turbulent period of Irish history in 1867 united the Irish people in a patriotic fervour and outrage not matched until 1916. The events surrounding the dramatic rescue of Fenian leaders (resulting in the Martyrs' execution) attracted worldwide attention and sparked anti-British protests across the globe. Their trial is one of the most infamous British court cases of the nineteenth century and their hanging was Britain's last public multiple execution. In 2006 Bertie Ahern announced that the Irish government would grant the Martyrs a full state funeral and re-inter them in a grave at Glasnevin Cemetery. The plan foundered because their remains could not be located at that time. This book reveals the location of the remains and explains why they will never be returned to Ireland.
