In Jesus the Oracle, Annelies Gisela Moeser reads Jesus’s journey from Capernaum to Jerusalem in Mark’s gospel through the cultural context of second/third century Roman Egypt. Moeser provides a rich description of the Egyptian practice of oracles, including processional oracles, to build a model with which to read Mark. This prism brings attention to descriptions of Jesus’s supernatural knowledge and wisdom, such as in the story of the Rich Man (Mk 10:17–22). In contrast to Clement of Alexandria’s homily on the Rich Man which counseled detachment from possessions, this reading from a non-elite perspective considers Jesus’s advice to be more radical. This model of processional oracles highlights the importance of access to the divine, including by non-elite crowds, by persons with disabilities (e.g., in comparing Bartimaeus [Mk 10:46–52] with Gemellus Horion of Karanis [a town in Egypt]), and by children. Traditional Egyptian religion upheld the existing sociopolitical regime. However, Jesus’s procession and proclamation of the basileia (reign) of G*d subverts the Roman world order and that of their local, elite allies.

Zephaniah's Oracles against the Nations deals with exegetical methods as well as their application to the text. The first part of the book examines the Hebrew text from the viewpoint of synchrony, employing insights from modern linguistic and literary theory. Such important concepts as text-grammar, textual hierarchy, communicational and actantial analysis on the one hand, and prosodic hierarchy and Hebrew versification on the other, emerge from this discussion. The second part of the book discusses diachronical matters such as the redactional process, its theological and pastoral significance, and the hermeneutical implications of such diachronical study. Of special interest are the additional sections on the issues of the so-called woe-cry and oracles against the nations in the Old Testament. This timely study is particularly useful for those interested in the linguistic analysis and literary interpretation of the Hebrew Bible.

Oracles Of Empire written by David S. Shields and has been published by University of Chicago Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-06-15 with Literary Criticism categories.

This innovative look at previously neglected poetry in British America represents a major contribution to our understanding of early American culture. Spanning the period from the Glorious Revolution (1690) to the end of King George's War (1750), this study critically reconstitutes the literature of empire in the thirteen colonies, Canada, and the West Indies by investigating over 300 texts in mixed print and manuscript sources, including poems in pamphlets and newspapers. British America's poetry of empire was dominated by three issues: mercantilism's promise that civilization and wealth would be transmitted from London to the provinces; the debate over the extent of metropolitan prerogatives in law and commerce when they obtruded upon provincial rights and interests; and the argument that Britain's imperium pelagi was an ethical empire, because it depended upon the morality of trade, while the empires of Spain and France were immoral empires because they were grounded upon conquest. In discussing these issues, Shields provides a virtual anthology of poems long lost to students of American literature.

Proclus And The Chaldean Oracles written by Nicola Spanu and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-08-04 with History categories.

This volume examines the discussion of the Chaldean Oracles in the work of Proclus, as well as offering a translation and commentary of Proclus’ Treatise On Chaldean Philosophy. Spanu assesses whether Proclus’ exegesis of the Chaldean Oracles can be used by modern research to better clarify the content of Chaldean doctrine or must instead be abandoned because it represents a substantial misinterpretation of originary Chaldean teachings. The volume is augmented by Proclus’ Greek text, with English translation and commentary. Proclus and the Chaldean Oracles will be of interest to researchers working on Neoplatonism, Proclus and theurgy in the ancient world.
