Excerpt from The Organic Chemistry of Nitrogen This book originated in lectures given to more advanced students in Oxford. Its object is thus primarily educational, and it is in no sense intended as a work of reference. I have endeavoured to give an account of the present state of knowledge on those parts of the subject which are of the greatest theoretical interest, and at the same time to avoid overloading the text with the names of less important substances. In dealing with the vast group of heterocyclic compounds, I have thought it better not to attempt even an enumeration of all the known types of ring; but I have selected a few of the more important, and discussed these in detail. I have assumed throughout that the reader has at least an elementary knowledge of organic and of general chemistry. It is becoming generally recognized that organic chemistry cannot be treated satisfactorily without reference to those questions of physical chemistry which it involves. To attempt a separation of the two is to refuse all the assistance which can be derived from what is really the quantitative side of chemistry. The various physical questions are therefore discussed as they arise. A full treatment of the phenomena of tautomerism would have required too great an interruption of the main current of thought; but I have tried to indicate the more important points in which they are illustrated by the bodies under consideration. The dynamics of organic reactions is a field which, in spite of the increasing amount of attention recently devoted to it, is still very largely unexplored; and yet it is of the utmost value for elucidating the mechanism of chemical change. Excerpt from The Fixation of Atmospheric Nitrogen Comparatively little work of importance on the theoretical Side of nitrogen fixation has appeared since the first edition of this book was published. On the other hand, the development of fixation processes on the technical Side received an enormous impulse under the stress of war conditions. The chief progress has been in the production of synthetic ammonia by the Haber and cyanamide processes, and in the methods of oxidising ammonia to nitric acid. The expansion in the production of synthetic nitrogen compounds has been remarkable. The estimated production of the various nitrogenous compounds for 1917, in Short tons of nitrogen, is given as follows by the American Ordnance Department. Excerpt from Chemistry of the Organic Dyestuffs Coloured carbon compounds come under the latter classification. The number of organic compounds containing, besides carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen is very large, and by far the greater number of them are colourless. On the other hand, some compounds of carbon with these elements possess colour which far surpasses that Of any other element, both as regards intensity and character. The coloured carbon compounds Often differ little, or not at all, from the colourless ones in their percentage composition, and it is this fact which renders it certain that it is the structure of the compounds which causes in one case colour, in the other none. In the life-processes of plants and animals both colourless and coloured carbon compounds are formed, and the latter have been employed since the earliest periods as dye-materials. Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Excerpt from Organic Geochemistry The 5 major constituents of carbonaceous substances are carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and sulfur. These elements are all Of low atomic weight and are thought to be products of low-temperature stellar reactions. They are widely distributed through the cosmos and play major roles in the thermonuclear processes of the stars. moreover, such isotopes as 6c, 8c1, 16832 and 16836 have total proton and neutron numbers divisible by 4 and are particularly abundant. Carbon, hydrogen, and a number of other elements normally associated with carbonaceous substances have been detected in interstellar space, nebulae, stars, planetary atmospheres, and comets. Table 1 contains a summary Of abundances Of the first 28 elements of the periodic table as they occur in typical cosmic settings. It is obvious from Table 1 that meteorites have lost a very high propor tion of their lighter elements, presumably through escape because Of low gravitational fields. The losses of hydrogen, because of marked volatility of its simpler compounds, and of nitrogen, because of its relatively low chemical affinity, are particularly important with respect to carbonaceous substances. The tremendous abundances of the elements making up carbonaceous substances, C, H, N, O, and S, in most stars, and in the universe in general, direct one's attention toward their origin and distribution. Excerpt from Liquid Air, Oxygen, Nitrogen It is his right - What am I saying? It is, above all, his duty. The public will shrive him - and I also - all the more because of the amount of labour he has bestowed on this very important question; because of the improvements which are due to him in the apparatus for liquefying air, Claude is the best fitted to accomplish successfully the necessary task. Excerpt from Journal of the Chemical Society, 1905, Vol. 88 of 1: Abstracts of Papers on Organic Chemistry From the foregoing summary of results, it becomes evident that a far-reaching series of changes will soon be needed in our system of atomic weights. A change in chlorine or nitrogen implies many other changes in the table, and if the accepted value for silver Should be modified the alterations would be most sweeping. The atomic weights of silver, chlorine, and bromine enter into the calculation of nearly all other atomic weights, and form, so to speak, the platform upon which the entire structure stands. The changes, however, which are suggested at present, are not final. Work is in progress in several laboratories which may confirm or modify many of the accepted values, and until that work is finished, at least so far as the fundamental data are concerned, it is wisest for us to suspend judgment and await developments. Were we to recon struct the table of atomic weights on the basis of the evidence nowbefore us, we should do it imperfectly, and a new revision would be demanded next year or the year after. Confusion would inevitably follow. Fortunately, the matter is not urgent, for the corrections which now seem desirable are not large, and the existing figures are accurate enough for all ordinary purposes. We therefore recommend that the table for 1905 be continued in use without change during 1906, even although some modifications are theoretically desirable. A year hence we shall be in a better position for a critical adjustment of the data, and no harm can follow from the delay. In accordance with the expressed wish of a majority of the larger committee, we also recommend that the table based upon the oxygen Standard be made official. So far as this committee is concerned, the private opinions of its members will be subordinated to the desires of the majority, and the table referred to hydrogen will no longer appear as a part of its report. For the present, a few suggestions may not be unacceptable, which follow from an examination of the lecture by Guye. Rayleigh, Leduc, Guye, Gray, and others, from their studies of nitrogen and its oxides, have accumulated a mass of strong evidence in favour of a lower value for nitrogen. The data furnished by Stas, on the other hand, point to the higher value which has heretofore been generally adopted. Can we abandon the one in favour of the other, and accept the new figure without reserve? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
