Barbara Nadel's The Ottoman Cage is a spicy thriller set in Istanbul's back alleys. Inspector Cetin Ikmen and forensic pathologist Arto Sarkissian have been friends since childhood, and their work together in Istanbul's criminal justice system has only served to cement their friendship. When they're both called to a flat to investigate the death of a twenty-year-old, there is no reason to think their relationship will alter. The case, however, is a strange one. Ikmen learns from the neighbours that they have never seen the man enter or leave the flat. The only visitor they're aware of is a solitary, well-dressed Armenian. Stranger still is that the limbs of the body are withered, and the victim seems to have been kept prisoner inside a gilded cage. What is it that's making Ikmen's old friend Arto, himself an Armenian, especially uncomfortable about the case?

This is a true story reflecting the strife, the agony and the pain of the people of Greece among others who lived under the rule of the Ottoman Empire. There has been a lot of speculation and incorrect information surfacing through the ages. The author of this book spared no opportunity of examining numerous sources and spending additional time (seven years worth) in order to bring to light the truth about a very devastating period of the people involved in the making of this part of history without prejudice. In order for the Ottomans to survive in a hostile world in which they were surrounded by adversaries, they had to employ several unorthodox and at times unacceptable practices not only toward their enslaved subjects, but also toward their own people. Called by their European adversaries "the sick man of Europe" due to their unique and mysterious way of life, they managed to elude everyone and flourish under a harsh environment which others could have not possibly survived. One of the hardships bestowed upon their enslaved people was the abduction of their children in order for them to serve the emperor. This story is about a group of these children (one in particular), and the course of the events which led to a horrible tragedy.

This is the story of the House of Osman, the imperial dynasty that ruled the Ottoman Empire for more than seven centuries, an empire that once stretched from central Europe to North Africa and from Persia to the Adriatic. The capital of this empire was Istanbul, ancient Byzantium, a city that stands astride Europe and Asia on the Bosphorus. And it was in the great palace of Topkapi Sarayi that the sultans of this empire ruled. Inside the Seraglio - a classic of Ottoman history - takes us behind the gilded doors of the Topkapi and into the heart of the palace: the harem, where the sultan would surround himself with his wives, concubines, eunuchs, pages, dwarfs and mutes and where all the tempestuous events of empire were so often played out. This is the history of a remarkable palace in all its colour and opulence and the story of its influence on a great empire.

The internationally acclaimed, polarizing, fictional Romantic Saga. Roxelana was the most seductive, powerful, egotistical, intriguing, manipulative, and enigmatic woman of the early sixteenth century. History had known no one of such beauty and cunning. Yet very few know her story... Europe is in turmoil under the oppressive rule of the Hapsburgs and the incessant raids of marauding Tartar Warriors. Istanbul, the eye of the Ottoman Sultanate and considered to be the center of the Universe, is the largest and most cosmopolitan city in the world. It is intoxicating and vibrant. But it is also a metropolis of mis-placed trust, of decadence, run by a sexually charged, drug-riddled bureaucracy. In the middle of this city, high on an imposing promontory, is the fabled Topkapi Palace - the Seraglio of Sultan Suleyman Khan - the Shadow of God on Earth. Within its multitude of gazel-filled courtyards, along its secluded arcades and twisting down through its labyrinth of corridors to the solidly locked doors of the Sultan's Harem, are secrets and whispers that promise death by strangulation to some, and absolute power to others. It is in this world that a young girl, abducted by Tartars and sold into slavery, captured the heart of the greatest Ottoman Sultan and rose to control the largest armies on Earth from within the gilded cage of Topkapi Harem. But does she know that there are those who would see her dead? And yet another whose undying love, if revealed, would lead to the destruction of all her well-laid plans? The story of Roxelana has remained hidden for centuries and needs to be told. It is about someone we should all be acquainted with intimately.

Staging The Ottoman Turk written by Esin Akalin and has been published by Columbia University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-10-11 with Literary Criticism categories.

In the wake of the fear that gripped Europe after the fall of Constantinople in 1453, English dramatists, like their continental counterparts, began representing the Ottoman Turks in plays inspired by historical events. The Ottoman milieu as a dramatic setting provided English audiences with a common experience of fascination and fear of the Other. The stereotyping of the Turks in these plays—revolving around complex themes such as tyranny, captivity, war, and conquests—arose from their perception of Islam. The Ottomans' failure in the second siege of Vienna in 1683 led to the reversal of trends in the representation of the Turks on stage. As the ascending strength of a web of European alliances began to check Ottoman expansion, what then began to dazzle the aesthetic imagination of eighteenth century England was the sultan's seraglio with images of extravaganza and decadence. In this book, Esin Akalin draws upon a selective range of seventeenth and eighteenth century plays to reach an understanding, both from a non-European perspective and Western standpoint, how one culture represents the other through discourse, historiography, and drama. The book explores a cluster of issues revolving around identity and difference in terms of history, ideology, and the politics of representation. In contextualizing political, cultural, and intellectual roots in the ideology of representing the Ottoman/Muslim as the West’s Other, the author tackles with the questions of how history serves literature and to what extent literature creates history.
