When the case of a missing senior fellow takes Denton and his lover Janet Striker to Oxford, they are looking forward to exchanging the noise and crowds of turn-of-the-century London for the more meditative byways of academia. But the dreaming spires, it seems, can give birth to nightmares just as livid and brutal as the burgeoning metropolis, as Denton and Janet slowly uncover a crime so bizarre that it seems to have emerged from the pages of a penny shocker rather than an academic treatise. Delving into the tightly-knit and intensely jealous world of archaeology, they discover an enmity that reaches back to Schliemann's excavation of Troy, a tragic tale of suicide and unfulfilled lust, and a curious archaeological exhibit that is not at all what it seems.

Over the last decade (and indeed ever since the Cold War), the rise of insurgents and non-state actors in war, and their readiness to use terror and other irregular methods of fighting, have led commentators to speak of 'new wars'. They have assumed that the 'old wars' were waged solely between states, and were accordingly fought between comparable and 'symmetrical' armed forces. Much of this commentary has lacked context or sophistication. It has been bounded by norms and theories more than the messiness of reality. Fed by the impact of the 9/11 attacks, it has privileged some wars and certain trends over others. Most obviously it has been historically unaware. But it has also failed to consider many of the other dimensions which help us to define what war is - legal, ethical, religious, and social. The Changing Character of War, the fruit of a five-year interdisciplinary programme at Oxford of the same name, draws together all these themes, in order to distinguish between what is really changing about war and what only seems to be changing. Self-evidently, as the product of its own times, the character of each war is always changing. But if war's character is in flux, its underlying nature contains its own internal consistency. Each war is an adversarial business, capable of generating its own dynamic, and therefore of spiralling in directions that are never totally predictable. War is both utilitarian, the tool of policy, and dysfunctional. This book brings together scholars with world-wide reputations, drawn from a clutch of different disciplines, but united by a common intellectual goal: that of understanding a problem of extraordinary importance for our times. This book is a project of the Oxford Leverhulme Programme on the Changing Character of War.

Fellowship And Freedom written by Thomas Leng and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-04-29 with History categories.

This is the first modern study of the Fellowship of Merchant Adventurers - England's most important trading company of the sixteenth century - in its final century of existence as a privileged organisation. Over this period, the Company's main trade, the export of cloth to northwest Europe, was overshadowed by rising traffic with the wider world, whilst its privileges were continually criticised in an era of political revolution. But the Company and its membership were not passive victims of these changes; rather, they were active participants in the commercial and political dramas of the century. Using thousands of neglected private merchant papers, Fellowship and Freedom views the Company from the perspective of its members, in the process bringing to life the complex social worlds of early modern merchants. For members, 'freedom' meant not just the right to access a privileged market, but also to trade independently, which could conflict with the 'fellowship' of corporate affiliation, and the responsibilities to the collective that it entailed. The study's major theme is the challenge of maintaining corporate unity in the face of this and other pressures that the Company faced. It restores the centrality of the Merchant Adventurers within three important historical narratives: England's transition from the margins to the centre of the European, and later global, economy; the rise and fall of the merchant corporation as a major form of commercial government in premodern Europe; and the political history of the corporation in an era of state formation and revolution.

This study shows that Britain's 1960s moral revolution was importantly influenced by currents within British Christianity - not that the Sixties were a popular revolt against the churches, but that revolts against convention within the churches were highly significant in allowing Britain's 'secular revolution' to gain its own momentum.

This book traces the history of Exeter College, Oxford, from its first endowment by Walter Stapeldon, bishop of Exeter, in 1314 until the College's refoundation by Sir William Petre in the 1560s and the election of the zealously protestant Thomas Holland as head of the College in 1592, which brought Exeter's reputation as a fiercely catholic college to a definitive end. It is closely based on the sources, particularly the College's unpublished account rolls, and deals in detail with all aspects of College life during the period: the origins and careers of the fellows; books, studies and intellectual life; possessions and finances; the College site; the daily round, as reflected in the entertainment of visitors, relations with old members, the travels of the fellows, and the services held in the chapel; and the rise of the College's undergraduate population. The effects of the Reformation on the College are given particularly full treatment, and here, as at all points, the history of the College is related to the general history of the period, so that, for example, the effects of the Black Death and of the economic depression of the fifteenth century are seen in microcosm through the College's history. The richness of the sources has allowed Exeter's story to be told with a fullness not attempted in other comparable college histories and at the same time to be seen as part of the wider history of England.
