For I conceived, that among the champions of the Roman church, the English 1n reason must be the best, or equal to the best, as being by most expert maste1s trained up purposely for this war, and per petually practised m it. Excerpt from The English Reformation and Puritanism: With Other Lectures and Addresses Since his departure many students and friends have urged the publication of his manuscripts. There has been some hesitation about consenting to publish his lectures because of his well-known aversion to this while living, and also because much of his available material had not been written for publication. Furthermore, a number of his lectures were written years ago, and from time to time, as new facts were discovered to modify or amplify previous conceptions, notes were inserted, some of which were not elaborated and consequently had to be omitted in preparing the material for the press. Dr. Hulbert's method of classroom work was the use of an outline of his course for individual study, and the prepa ration of special subjects by students, while his lectures served as a preview or gave a resume of periods that were studied. It is not deemed expedient to reprint his syllabus of The English Reformation and Puritanism, as it is avail able for those who may specially desire it. Acknowledgment is made to his colleagues, Professors Franklin Johnson and J. W. Moncrief for their kind assist ance in seeing this volume through the press, as well as for their labor of love in teaching his classes during his illness and finishing for him his term's courses. Excerpt from The Protestant, Vol. 1: Essays on the Principal Points of Controversy Between the Church of Rome and the Reformed The volumes of the protestant, of which a new edition is now offered to the public, originated in a newspaper puff about the pretended holiness of the popish chapel, lately erected in Glasgow. 'the exposure of the absurdity of the' pretence led to a defence of it by some persons of the Romish communion; and a number Of let ters on both sides were published in the Glasgow Chronicle, in the summer of 1818. These constitute the first part of volume first; and what follows is a series of essays, published weekly, for four years, embracing the principal points of controversy between the church of Rome, on the one hand, and the different communions known by the name of Protestant, on the other. The author made comparatively little account of the differences of Opinion and practice which exist among the latter, not because he thought them unimportant, but because he wished to keep by the one point Of exposing the errors, impositions and idolatry of _the papal church, which make it not only law ful, but the duty of all Christians to separatefrom her communion; and thus to vindi cate the Protestant churches, in the matter of their separation, whatever mistakes any of them may have fallen into in other respects. Excerpt from The Protestant, Vol. 2: Essays on the Principal Points of Controversy Between the Church of Rome and the Reformed I long ago maintained, that the head of the Catholic or universal church, must be infallible, otherwise there would be no security against defection; but Bishop Ha seems not to be quite certain whether the pope be infallible or not, though he seems rather inclined to believe that he is. He puts a question, and gives an answer thus Q. When the head of the church emits any decree concerning faith or morals, to which he requires submission from all the faithful, is he himself infalli ble in what he there teaches? A. This is not proposed as an article of divine faith, nor has the church made any decision concerning it. Great numbers of the most learned divines are of Opinion, that in such a case the head of the church is infallible in what he teaches; but there are others of a contrary opinion, who think that his decree is not to be considered as infallibly certain, till the body of the bishops receive it, either by their express approbation, or by their tacit submission to it, by which it becomes a decree of the whole church, whose infallibility is undoubted.
