Excerpt from The Paleozoic Stratigraphy of New York The route back to Albany follows the shore line of glacial Lake Iroquois for some distance, then crosses the belt of Medina rocks to Rochester. Here is seen the gorge of the lower Genesee River, with its section of the early Silurian beds. Remarkable glacial features are displayed along the route lead ing east to Syracuse. The Salina beds, which inclose valuable salt and gypsum deposits, are encountered on this stretch. The Clinton beds are found in their full development between Syracuse and Utica, where a detour is made to Trenton Falls, one of the historic localities for New York geology. Thence the way leads down the Mohawk Valley, affording a section from the Potsdam to the Frankfort, with another detour north to Sara toga Springs, over the Adirondack pre-cambrian formations for some distance, and into Albany. Excerpt from Guide to the Geology and Paleontology of the Schoharie Valley in Eastern New York Yet in all its history there has not been a geologic map of the region prepared except on an insignificant scale and no adequate account of its formations and structure have heretofore been given. It is to meet this condition, to provide students of geology and paleontology with a suitable map and guide to this attractive region that I have asked Professor Graban to prepare the work that follows. The Schoharie valley presents a geologic section almost nu equaled ia this State for its completeness. It begins low in the series with the last stages of the Lower Siluric (lorraine) and runs high into the base of the Upper Devonic; its localities are compactly assembled and easily accessible. The valley is beau tiful. Fertile. Hospitable and well supplied with the conveniences of living. The spot is ideal for the pursuit of an intimate ac quaintance with a very considerable and typical representation of New York geology. Excerpt from Catalogue of Type Specimens of Paleozoic Fossils in New York State Museum While the main part of the book is devoted to the biologic arrange ment of the type material, a second part gives a concise relisting of the species in their stratigraphic arrangement. A chief purpose of this record is to make available to students the card catalogue of these types now in the possession of the museum. At the same time, it serves to indicate the wealth of the museum in these important elements, of which upward of 5000 are here listed, a number which exceeds all type specimens of paleozoic organisms from the New York rocks in the possession of all other collections taken together. Excerpt from Eastern New York and Western New England The route to be followed in excursion A - l is indicated on Figure 1. In the Hudson Valley the Paleozoic stratigraphy will be reviewed briefly, and evidence of two notable disturbances will be examined. In the Adirondack Mountains the results of recent field studies will be used in considering the form of the great anorthosite mass, the mechanics of its intrusion, and the differentiation of the magma into various rock types. The complex belt of folds, thrusts, and schistosity in western Vermont and Massachusetts still holds numerous major problems of stratigraphy and structure; these will be pointed out during examination of the results of recent detailed work. Old erosion surfaces are particularly well displayed in western New England. They will be pointed out, and their bearing on the late geologic history will be discussed. In the Connecticut Valley the com position, structure, and fossil content of the Triassic rocks will be studied, and the problem of the original extent of the Triassic strata will be considered. In this area features that prove widespread stagnation of the last ice sheet are especially well developed. Several museums in the region have rich paleontologic and geologic collections, which will be utilized to supplement the field examinations. Excerpt from Geology of the City of New York: Greater New York In geological affinities, if the term may be used, Manhattan and the Bronx are allied to northern or primordial, even archaean' structures; Richmond, Kings and Queens to southern and recent, though, indeed, in Richmond, there is a problematical nucleus of serpentine hills, probably derivative from crystalline schists, similar to those of Manhattan Island. In View of this diversity of feature the discussion of the topo graphical conditions and the geological nature of the City of New York will naturally fall into. Three sections; first that of Manhattan Island, with an appendix embracing briefly the similar construction of the Borough of the Bronx; second, that of Brooklyn and Queens and third, that of Richmond.
