The parables of Jesus seem to be an unending source of inspiration for teachers and preachers and it is possible to return to them again and again to find a new message in them. That is certainly the experience of Professor Hunter who, after the great success of his Preaching the New Testament (which was reprinted within its first year of publication), has here produced a second series of sermons on the best-known Gospel parables. Those who know his books already will need no further prompting; those who do not will find him here on his best form, the clarity of insight in no way dimmed by the years of experience. A.M. Hunter, Professor Emeritus of New Testament, was formerly Master of Christ's College, Aberdeen.

The parables of Jesus are timeless stories -- and with the current popularity of narrative preaching, the parables are a familiar topic in the contemporary pulpit. But preaching on the parables is not as easy as it looks at first glance. Should we simply tell the parable in our own words and let it stand on its own feet, or is its lesson most effectively communicated by constructing a sermon around the central theme? Or should the preacher spiritualize the parable by probing for allegorical meaning? Master homiletician John Brokhoff aids preachers in answering these key questions with rigorous and enlightening background information on parables from Mark and John appearing in Cycle B of the Revised Common Lectionary. He offers not only exegesis and interpretation for each passage, but also rich material for sermon development, suggested outlining approaches, and preaching illustrations. Parables included are: - The Doorkeeper (Mark 13:32-37) - The Good Shepherd (John 10:11-18) - The True Vine (John 15:1-8) - A Strong Man (Mark 3:20-25) - The Miracle Seed (Mark 4:26-34) - Bread To Eat (John 6:35, 41-51) - Eat The Bread (John 6:51-58) A popular preacher, teacher, and writer, John R. Brokhoff served as Professor of Homiletics at Candler School of Theology, Emory University from 1965 to 1979. Prior to that he pastored Lutheran congregations in Virginia, Georgia, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania. Brokhoff is the recipient of the George Washington medal from the Freedom Foundation of Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, and is the author of many CSS titles, including This You Can Believe and Pray Like Jesus.

The parables of Jesus are intended for everyone, revealing deep truths about God, the Kingdom of Heaven and what it means to be a human being. Each story is, in effect, an invitation to engage with the God of mercy, compassion, forgiveness and love. At the same time the parables, quite purposefully, challenge us, provoking a response, which also make them a call to action. At the heart of this process is Jesus who comes to reveal the nature and being of God but does so through the ordinary things of everyday life. Ultimately, what we discover in the parables, is a God who is closer to us than we could ever imagine and loves us more than we could ever know. This is the compassionate father of Jesus Christ who is our father too. This book invites the reader to spend time with the word of God and in so doing find a truth which has always been there just waiting to be discovered, like the father waiting for his wayward young son to return home. This truth is that the parables not only reveal what God is like but what we are called to be and in them, therefore, we find the potential not only for ourselves as individuals but for the church and the entire human race. By reading and engaging with the parables of Jesus, we find the Holy Spirit alive, active, and working in us, feeding our minds and inspiring our hearts. As a fruit of his ministry of preaching Deacon Sean offers these insights in a style that is both readable and accessible. I am most grateful to Deacon Sean for his generosity in offering these prayerful reflections and for the way in which he enables the reader to encounter the presence of the living God through the rich teachings that the parables of Jesus continue to offer for our world today. Living Parables: Today's Versions presents parables in updated language and images. Biblical parables are culture-bound; they are embedded in images that were well-known to a Jewish culture. Jesus was a first-century, Jewish, Galilean peasant, and his concerns, speech, and idioms belong to that culture. His milieu is far removed from ours today. The images found in parables carried meaning that is lost on modern audiences. A simple example will suffice. In the Jewish world of the first century, leaven was considered to be corrupt because people did not understand how bacteria worked. On the most important day of the year--Passover--bread had to be unleavened, uncorrupted. Today, no one thinks of yeast in that way. If we want bread dough to rise, we need to leaven it. Therefore, what image might Jesus use today that carries some of the same cultural connotations that yeast or leaven carried in his world? Might he speak about Ebola virus or radioactivity? Those images carry the same negativity that yeast or leaven bore in his world. This book contains parables found in the New Testament in a form that Jesus might tell today.
