Das Werk erschien 1855 im Harper's Magazine und thematisiert die durch die industrielle Revolution ausgelöste Ausbeutung des Menschen. Mit dem Bau von Bahnschienen und Fabriken Mitte des neunzehnten Jahrhunderts war die Industrialisierung in den Vereinigten Staaten in ihrer vollen Blüte. Statt wie zunächst erhofft, die Demokratie weiter zu entwickeln, wurde bald deutlich, dass durch die wirtschaftliche Veränderungen auch ein sozialer Strukturwandel folgen würde: Der Abstand zwischen der Arbeiterklasse und den privilegierten Schichten wuchs stetig. Melville kritsiert in "The Paradise of Bachelors and the Tartarus of Maids" jene Klassenunterschiede und ungerechten Machtverhältnisse.
