Kowhaiwhai, according to John Hovell, is about process, a shorthand summary of the passage of life, and a space within the whare whakairo (decorated meeting house) for the Maori artist to express his wry and droll view of human nature. This book looks at John Hovell's life and work, his ongoing interest in kowhaiwhai, and locates him within a larger story of Maori art. From the mid-1960s, Hovell was part of the contemporary Maori art movement, exhibiting his paintings alongside artists such as Paratene Matchitt and Sandy Adsett, and taking part in the activities of organisations such as the Maori Artists and Writers Society. Since the mid-1980s Hovell has been designing and producing kowhaiwhai and murals for marae projects in Auckland, the Coromandel peninsula and the East Coast. He has established a reputation as a kowhaiwhai artist of note, working alongside tohunga whakairo (carving experts) such as Pakiriki Harrison. Richly illustrated with over 100 colour images of Hovell's painting and kowhaiwhai projects, this book demonstrates that Hovell is an important artist who has made a substantial contribution to contemporary Maori visual culture.

My mission is to ease some of that fear and reveal the importance of making preparation. Understanding breaks the power of fear. Truth lifts all the deception surrounding what happens to our spirits after this life ends. The passage, in this respect, is the journey, or process of life that leads to our final days, physical death, and resting place. For each soul, the journey is as unique as the DNA that identifies us. The commonality of life's passage is that each soul born into this world will ultimately leave it. The surprising thing is that we have total control over what happens to our spirits afterwards - life after physical death. This book is written to dispel the widely accepted myth that we are all going to heaven when we die. Not everyone will be warmly welcomed into the loving arms of our Heavenly Father after death. This myth is a good cliche for funerals, but it is neither Scriptural, nor the truth of what really happens to our spirits after death. My hope is that while we are yet alive, from this book, we will learn fact from fiction concerning our final destination and the passage that leads to our desired resting place.

‘Passing’ is a common euphemism for the death of a person, as he or she is said to ‘pass away’ or ‘pass on’. This open-ended saying has at its heart a notion of transformation from one state to another, which in turn grants the possibility of grasping or approximating the passage of time and the materiality of death and decay. This book begins with the idea that since all material things - whether animals, human beings, objects or buildings - undergo some form of passing, then the specific transformation in these passages and the materiality actively given to it can offer us a grasp of otherwise precarious temporalities.
