It was August 2004 when the white dove hit the windshield of my car as I was driving home from church. Did it give up its life to save me or was it foretelling my continued misery and/or death? Little did I know then, but this was only the beginning of my descent into hell. The Patient No One Wanted is about my exposure to toxic mold in my classroom at the high school where I taught, and it describes the way in which the exposure has affected me over the years. The title refers to my endless search for a doctor to help me. The school was closed for six weeks because parents had complained that their children were getting sick from mold. We held classes at the Bristol International Speedway while the school was supposedly being remediated. However, conditions were even worse when we returned. The school had a flat roof that held water and was conducive to growing algae, which in turn grew mold. Over the years the roof continually leaked, and ceiling tiles became soaked and fell to the floor. In addition, buckets had to be placed in the halls to collect water, and black debris ran down the walls. Many "modern," airtight schools have a similar moisture problem. Having been a biology teacher and considering my exposure, I researched the subject of toxic mold extensively and corresponded with several renowned experts, such as Dr. Harriet Burge, who helped pioneer the field of aerobiology (study of airborne microorganism) and developed and ran the program at Harvard for ten years. I also received feedback from Dr. Ruth Etzel, the director of EPA's office of Children's Health Protection. Dr. Etzel was the chief investigator into the cause of bleeding lungs in a cluster of infants from Cleveland, Ohio. The cause turned out to be the black mold, Stachybotrys. I want the world to know what toxic mold can do to one's health. Along with teachers, the children that attend these contaminated schools are among our most valuable resources for the future, and they are in jeopardy!

This is a book about psychiatry and alternatives to it, written from a patient's point of view. For too long, mental patients have been faceless, voiceless people. We have been thought of, at worst, as subhuman monsters, or, at best, as pathetic cripples, who might be able to hold down menial jobs and eke out meagre existences, given constant professional support. Not only have others thought of us in this stereotyped way, we have believed it of ourselves. It is only in this decade, with the emergence and growth of the mental patients' liberation movement, that we ex-patients have begun to shake off this distorted image and to see ourselves for what we are- a diverse group of people, with strengths and weaknesses, abilities and needs, and ideas of our own. Our ideas about our "care" and "treatment" at the hands of psychiatry, about the nature of "mental illness," and about new and better ways to deal with (and truly to help) people undergoing emotional crises differ drastically from those of mental health professionals.

Why Not Me by Joseph C. Aurelia Joseph C. Aurelia wrote Why Not Me: A Brave Journey with Cancer to share the story of the loss of his beloved wife, Camille. The book details her battle with cancer. Why Not Me shares information for people with cancer, caretakers, family members, and caring professionals alike. When a loved one is diagnosed with terminal cancer, Aurelia asks readers to support that person, be there, and always support their decisions. Protect them, advocate for them, love them, and yet prepare for their death. “Expressing and dealing with grief is paramount,” Aurelia says. Primarily, Aurelia’s experience taught him that the medical system needs to change the care of Stage 4 patients. His book shows the need to treat the person with cancer, and not just the cancer. But at heart, Why Not Me teaches readers to help their loved one recognize both physical and emotional pain, and to alleviate suffering as much as possible. Decision-making and critical thinking along this journey are a must – Why Not Me may help you and your loved ones in your journey with cancer.

This book draws from the everyday experiences as well as the harsh realities confronting behavioral care providers on the frontline. The book recounts the stories and sometimes disturbing emotions of people whose lives have undergone sudden change or even drastic trauma; people whose feelings of comfort and safety have been shattered by exposure to illness, abuse, death and bereavement. The perspectives and experiences of nurses, social care staff, patients, children and families are at the core of understanding the importance, challenges and therapeutic vitality of emotions. The 55 individuals on the frontline who took part in the interviews on which this study is based discuss the emotions associated with care in mental health, pediatric oncology, AIDS/HIV, as well as child protection and abuse, racism, refugee exile, poverty, and social exclusion. Their bravery, openness, and ability to communicate and share their emotions make this book possible.

Drawn from three decades of parish ministry experience, Steward of Stories opens the delightfully complex and nuanced world of the congregation to a wider audience beyond, but including, local parish pastors. Each chapter brings together dramatically different stories about ordinary ministry situations organized around a core thematic connection, including pastoral incidents focused on topics like "Paying Attention," "Marry Me," and "Time to Go." Linking these together is the interwoven wisdom of an experienced pastor who encourages readers to consider the theological and ministry challenges at stake for us all. Clearly written and highly accessible, these vignettes are meant for lay and clergy audiences alike, especially as they come together in their mutual life in Christian community. These are stories about real people drawn from actual events--accounts that will prompt thoughtful contemplation and conversation among the faithful about saints and sinners in everyday congregations and situations. Each chapter concludes with helpful questions for use in both educational settings and individual study. This book is ideal for personal reflection or group discussion and will stimulate a richer awareness of the challenges and opportunities we all face in the ministries we share.

Medical Ethics In China written by Jing-Bao Nie and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-06-17 with Law categories.

Drawing on a wide range of primary historical and sociological sources and employing sharp philosophical analysis, this book investigates medical ethics from a Chinese-Western comparative perspective. In doing so, it offers a fascinating exploration of both cultural differences and commonalities exhibited by China and the West in medicine and medical ethics. The book carefully examines a number of key bioethical issues in the Chinese socio-cultural context including: attitudes toward foetuses; disclosure of information by medical professionals; informed consent; professional medical ethics; health promotion; feminist bioethics; and human rights. It not only provides insights into Chinese perspectives, but also sheds light on the appropriate methods for comparative cultural and ethical studies. Through his pioneering study, Jing-Bao Nie has put forward a theory of "trans-cultural bioethics," an ethical paradigm which upholds the primacy of morality whilst resisting cultural stereotypes, and appreciating the internal plurality, richness, dynamism and openness of medical ethics in any culture. Medical Ethics in China will be of particular interest to students and academics in the fields of Medical Law, Bioethics, Medical Ethics, Cross-Cultural Ethics as well as Chinese/Asian Studies and Comparative Cross-Cultural Studies.
