Excerpt from The Pearl of Asia: Reminiscences of the Court of a Supreme Monarch or Five Years in Siam During many leisure hours, while absent amid the sunny glades and emerald vales of Asia's most favored kingdom, Siam, I made numerous notes concerning that land of mystic lore and ruined fanes, a section novel to all who have been so fortunate as to have visited its walled city with its hundred glittering spires, whose temples and palaces are marvels of architectural beauty, whose wide-spreading rice-fields feed untold millions, its groves of waving palms ever ready to minister to man's wants, its rivers and canals plethoric with fish, its fruits and flowers lavishly luxuriant, an Eden of loveliness, the land of the lotus. To the general reader Siam is a terra incognita; much has been written concerning it by superficial observers, who came on one steamer and left on the next. What has been gathered for this volume has been carefully condensed and concisely told. It was my intention when appointed Minister to the Court at Bangkok, by President Cleveland, to prepare a work on this faraway and marvelous land that might prove of interest to many who may desire to know something of a people that live under a supreme monarch and follow the teaching of Buddha, and in doing so I have endeavored to hold the mirror up to nature, in fact, to "tell the truth." After beloved San Francisco anchorwoman Michelle Osher is found nearly decapitated in her palatial Nob Hill apartment, suspicion focuses immediately on her wealthy, arrogant husband, Paul. Inspector Mac Fleet and his partner are assigned the sensational case, and they quickly uncover an all-too-familiar pattern linking the widowed spouse to Sheyla Samonte, a part-time waitress enjoying a lavish lifestyle on Paul Osher's dime. The pair of seasoned detectives assume she wanted a promotion from mistress to wife. The investigation turns on its head when they discover Sheyla, a drop-dead gorgeous dancer born and raised in the Philippines, works at Pearls of Asia, a stylish restaurant featuring a cast of exotic transsexual performers who serve up flirtatious teasers along with delicious cocktails. Mac crawls down a rabbit hole and comes face to face with the uniquely captivating servers-Diamond, Reyna, Nadia, and Ashley-and unveils a fascinating lifestyle full of drama, humor, and high heels. When Sheyla refuses to cooperate unless Inspector Fleet takes her to brunch, he agrees even though he knows it's outside the lines of police protocol. Mac soon finds himself dealing with his own set of personal demons, unable to decide whether to arrest Sheyla or ask her on a date. The ensuing investigation reveals infidelities, betrayals, and a host of people who might want Michelle Osher dead. But as the case heats up, so does Mac's romantic interest in Sheyla, whose stunning beauty and charming personality compel him to question her involvement, but not her courage, and to cross the line between his personal impulses and professional responsibilities. Convinced of Sheyla's innocence, Mac devotes himself to finding the real killer. Ultimately, he is moved to take actions he never dreamed of to discover the truth about the case, Sheyla, and himself.

The Indian Ocean's strategic importance to China cannot be underestimated, given the oil, African minerals and container traffic that pass through it. Not since Admiral Zheng He sailed his fleet through these waters in the fifteenth century -- exploring and mapping them in a bid to extend the Celestial Empire's trading and tributary system -- has China been present here. Beijing's re-entry into the Indian Ocean after 600 years is part of its Belt and Road megaproject, in which it is investing trillions of dollars in infrastructure projects around the Ocean rim and in Sri Lanka, Maldives, Seychelles and Mauritius, including a military base in Djibouti. This has touched off a new and dangerous confrontation. Ranged against China is an informal alliance of India, the US, France, Australia, and, predictably, Japan, China's arch rival in the Asia-Pacific. China is in the Indian Ocean for the long haul and the entry of big-power politics into this sensitive maritime region will shape its future for decades. Bertil Lintner unearths this dramatic story, profiles the key players, examines the economic and naval balance of power and scrutinizes the intense competition to encourage small island nations to align with either New Delhi or Beijing.
