First published in 1912, this vintage book deals with the subject of death, with a particular focus on spiritualism, a religious movement based on the belief that spirits of the deceased exist and are able to communicate with living people. Contents include: “The Scientific Aspect of Life and Death”, “The Signs of Death”, “Rigor Mortis”, “Trance, Catalepsy, Suspended Animation, etc.”, “Premature Burial”, “Cases”, “Burial, Cremation, Mummification, etc.”, “The Causes of Death”, “Sudden Death”, etc. Hereward Carrington (1880 – 1958) was a famous British-born American paranormal investigator and author. His focus was telepathy, and among his subjects were many of the most well-known cases of ostensibly psychic ability of the time. Carrington wrote over 100 books on related subjects during his life. Other notable works by thus author include: “The Physical Phenomena of Spiritualism” (1907), “The Coming Science” (1908), and “Eusapia Palladino and her Phenomena” (1909). Many vintage books such as this are becoming increasingly scarce and expensive. We are republishing this volume now in an affordable, modern, high-quality edition complete with the original text and artwork.

Excerpt from On the Threshold of the Unseen: An Examination of the Phenomena of Spiritualism and of the Evidence for Survival After Death "A mind unwilling to believe, or even undesirous to be instructed, our weightiest evidence must ever fail to impress. It will insist on taking the evidence in bits and rejecting item by item. The man who announces his intention of waiting until a single absolutely conclusive bit of evidence turns up, is really a man not open to conviction, and if he be a logician he knows it. For modern logic has made it plain that single facts can never be 'proved' except by their coherence in a system. But as all the facts come singly anyone who dismisses them one by one is destroying the conditions under which the conviction of new truth could ever arise in his mind." During the greater part of the last century, and that which preceded it, the learned world as a whole treated with scorn and contempt all those obscure psychical phenomena which lie between the territory already conquered by science and the dark realms of ignorance and superstition. Many causes have in recent years contributed to lessen this aversion, which is not only passing away but giving place to an earnest desire to know what trustworthy evidence exists on behalf of super-normal, - often, but erroneously, called super-natural, - phenomena. Although many eminent scientific men in the past and present generation, both in England and abroad, have testified to the genuineness and importance of these phenomena official science still stands aloof. About 30 percent of hospice patients report a “visitation” by someone who is not there, a phenomenon known in end-of-life care as a deathbed vision. These visions can be of dead friends or family members and occur on average three days before death. Strikingly, individuals from wildly diverse geographic regions and religions—from New York to Japan to Moldova to Papua New Guinea—report similar visions. Appearances of our dead during serious illness, crises, or bereavement are as old as the historical record. But in recent years, we have tended to explain them in either the fantastical terms of the supernatural or the reductive terms of neuroscience. This book is about how, when, and why our dead visit us. Allan Kellehear—a medical sociologist and expert on death, dying, and palliative care—has gathered data and conducted studies on these experiences across cultures. He also draws on the long-neglected work of early anthropologists who developed cultural explanations about why the dead visit. Deathbed visions conform to the rituals that underpin basic social relations and expectations—customs of greeting, support, exchange, gift-giving, and vigils—because the dead must communicate with us in a social language that we recognize. Kellehear emphasizes the personal consequences for those who encounter these visions, revealing their significance for how the dying person makes meaning of their experiences. Providing vital understanding of a widespread yet mysterious phenomenon, Visitors at the End of Life offers insights for palliative care professionals, researchers, and the bereaved.
