Excerpt from Philosophy of Christian Experience: Eight Lectures Delivered Before the Ohio Wesleyan University on the Merrick Foundation The first of these circumstances was, that, unconsciously, and probably wholly unknown to himself, the founder of the lecture ship had been for more than fifty years a constructive force in the mind life and spiritual life of the lecturer. It is not given us to know here what subtle influences go from us, fashioning other lives. Possibly it may be an element of the joy or sorrow of eternity to make the discovery. It gives me profound pleas ure to make this public acknowledgment of a long-standing debt of gratitude. The pressure of a hand laid on me when a strip ling is still sensibly felt. Excerpt from Doctrine and Life: A Study of Some of the Principal Truths of the Christian Religion in Their Relation to Christian Experience The aim of this volume is to present the principal doctrines of Christianity in their correlation with the Christian life. These doctrines have therefore been approached from the point of View of the Christian consciousness rather than from that of philosophy or criticism. Our main question in this study is not, How might the Christian philosopher justify the belief under: review? Nor, How might the biblical scholar elaborate and defend it? But, What is the adaptation of the given doctrine to the needs of the soul, and its use in the Christian life? How is its truth attested in experience? Excerpt from The Philosophy of Faith and the Fourth Gospel The passages have. Been purposely chosen as con structive rather than controversial. The atmosphere of passing controversies has been deliberately avoided. The reader may sometimes be puzzled to find himself passing from philosophy to theology. On reflection he will, I think, see that this is only a natural consequence of what was to Dr. Holland at once his philosophy and his theology. To him the world of thought was one; a world without God was not a world; the process by which man passes from the primary human experience to the living faith through Christ in God was continuous; the logic of faith was the logic of history and fact, the logic of human experience - the philosophy, as he said, of the man who has become aware of the meaning and purpose of human life as a valid whole. Excerpt from Christian Conception and Experience It]: was one of the resolutions of President Edwards always to act according to the intuitions of his most exalted spiritual states, an eminently good, and noble resolution. It may partly have been both cause and effect of his lofty character. This re solution is the expression of an obvious duty and a pregnant principle, a principle which gives character to the following dis cussion. Men may also form a lofty conception of which they do not know the truth or reality but if they do not know the con trary, it has paramount claims on their service and devotion, which are necessary and conducive to spiritual light and felicity. Obedience to the best conception is an immutable obligation and cannot issue in anything but the happiest results. This practi cal truth, so simple, so clear and familiar, is the staple of much that follows in this little book. But there may be some novelty and advantage in the method of its presentation. Excerpt from Types of Religious Experience, Christian and Non-ChristianThis collection of papers is divided into three parts. The first three contributions which make up the first part are methodo logical in character. Since there is no equivalent for the German and French expressions 'religionswissenschaft' and science des religions' in English, History of Religions has been used pars pro toto as the term for the field of descriptive studies. The Place of the History of Religions in the Study of Theology (2) is discussed in the first paper.the second, which, in many respects, contains the core of the author's thought, summarizes his con cept of the nature of religious experience and a phenomenology of its forms of expression. It is entitled Universals in Religion because it Offers an outline of the structural elements the author believes to be characteristic of religion wherever and whenever found. It represents an attempt to go beyond the traditional exposition of the manifestations of religion (cf. Van der Leeuw's Phenomenology; Lehmann's Lehre von der Erscheinungswelt; Eliade's Morphologie) in the direction of what used to be called 'natural Theology, ' but with the endeavour to avoid the rationalistic preoccupation of the earlier (eighteenth-century) conceptlons. This essay has not been published before. The third essay on The Notion of the Classical in the Study of Religion (3) develops a construct to be used by the teacher and student of religions to steer a middle course between a historistic preoccupation with completeness of data in the history of religions, and arbitrary selection based upon a traditional or freely chosen Viewpoint. All three papers owe their existence to reflections which have grown out of the experience of teaching; they, as well as several of the following contributions, are meant to stimulate thought on the way in which instruction in our field might be improved.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
