Excerpt from The Philosophy of the Bible This book attempts the first scientific and popular presentation of the history of thought in biblical Judaism. The views laid down in this book are based on a minute study of the literatures concerned, biblical, Graeco-Jewish, and talmudic. For the arguments on which these views are based, the student is referred to my previous publications on the subject. Nevertheless the presentation is so arranged that, from the references given, the reader will always be able to verify my statements from the text of the Bible. Notably I have made it a point to give all the references necessary to an independent verification of my statements in cases where I had to treat of subjects as yet not fully discussed in my previous publications. This Preface is written on the tenth anniversary of my first sessions at the Hebrew Union College. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Philosophy of the Bible Vindicated Two things have long appeared certain to the Author first, that the science of Metaphysics is not so dry, ditfi cult, and obscure as it is generally thought: secondly, that the spread of irreligion is greatly facilitated by an almost general ignorance of the elementary principles of this science. The very mention of metaphysics sends a shudder through the frames of many persons. They look upon it as a something misty and obscure; they fancy that it is a sort of scientific nightmare which broods gloomily over the brain of the anxious student. Others do not dread it to such an extent; still, they consider it an unprofitable study. To them it is a virgin forest, filled with gnarled old trunks that defy alike the axe of the husbandman, and the eating tooth of time. They cannot penetrate its mazy depths, they say: a tangled undergrowth of hard defini tions intervenes between themselves and the knotty trees of Substance, Existence, Creation, and other giant trunks that grow in the vast wood-land of metaphysics. Perhaps they have ventured to peer timidly into its leafy groves; and then started back with a feeling akin to that experienced by children, when they hurry away from a dense wood. Excerpt from The Philosophy of Faith and the Fourth Gospel The passages have. Been purposely chosen as con structive rather than controversial. The atmosphere of passing controversies has been deliberately avoided. The reader may sometimes be puzzled to find himself passing from philosophy to theology. On reflection he will, I think, see that this is only a natural consequence of what was to Dr. Holland at once his philosophy and his theology. To him the world of thought was one; a world without God was not a world; the process by which man passes from the primary human experience to the living faith through Christ in God was continuous; the logic of faith was the logic of history and fact, the logic of human experience - the philosophy, as he said, of the man who has become aware of the meaning and purpose of human life as a valid whole. Excerpt from The Bible and the Critic In virtue of our wider knowledge, our truer perspective, and our more impartial and objective modes of thought, we can often solve Biblical problems to-day far more thoroughly and comprehensively than has ever been the case since the dawn of history. This may sound presumptuous, but it is better to be candid and face the facts than to assume an attitude of sanctimonious ignorance and morbidity, which is generally the cloak of conceit. Of course the Laudator temporal acti or the type of man who stepped reading thirty years ago, is still in our midst, and persists, from time to time, in chiming in, often in good faith. Is not this the presumption of science falsely so called? How have you come to hold this higher vantage ground of which you self-styled Higher critics boast? Can you furnish substantial grounds for your bold assertion that you are really wiser about some Bible questions than the Biblical authors themselves? How has your know ledge been increased a thousand-fold above even that of our immediate ancestors? The only real difficulty which confronts us in answering these questions is the lack of space incidental to every magazine article, which always renders it extremely difficult to'treat a great subject comprehensively, thoroughly, and with dignity. Our modern critical attitude towards the Bible - and this is the real question at issue, including as it does all thew previously raised - is mainly the product of three factors, ultimately reducible to one, that is, to a three-fold extension of our knowledge. This extension is due to three discoveries, which, regarded as organised branches of learning, constitute the three new sciences of I. Comparative Philology, II. Archaeology, and III. Excerpt from Christian Thought: Lectures and Papers on Philosophy, Christian Evidence, Biblical Elucidation State, some think too close, in the reign of Constantine, and this has been continued in European countries down to the present day when, however, it is keenly contested whether the State should continue to offer an endowment to the Church and whether the Church should accept such an endowment if offered. In the early ages of the United States Republic there were endowments provided for the Church, or rather for some particular Church, say the Church of England, but for the past century and more the States have been freeing themselves from all such entanglements. Still there are government acts which seem to imply, which I believe do really imply, an alliance between Church and State; as, for example, the prayers offered in the Senate and House of Representatives and in the opening of courts of justice; in the appointment of chaplains in the army and navy and in prisons; in the laws enacted for the preservation of the Sabbath, and above all, in the Bible being read in our national schools, and religion being taught in our State colleges. In these and in some other things there is an alliance between Church and State for good ends, which seem to me legitimate and highly commendable. Some, indeed, argue that these acts are all in the interest of civil law for the protection of life and property; but the people in enacting and practising them mean them to be religious as well. There are signs of a contest arising, in which it will be insisted that all that is religious in these acts, be handed over to the Churches; which will have difficulties, not impossibilities however, in providing teachers and chaplains and in protecting the Sabbath. Excerpt from Philosophy of the Plan of Salvation: A Book for the Times Convinced himself of the Divine origin of the religion of the Bible, the author commenced a series of letters to convey to his friend the evidence which had satisfied his own mind beyond the possibility of doubt. The results of this investigation are contained in the following chapters. The epistolary form in 'which a portion of the book was first written will account for some repetition, and some varieties in the style, which otherwise might not have been introduced. Excerpt from The Philosophy of Christianity 1. "God is a Spirit." 2. "Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God is One Lord." 3. "There are three Persons in the Godhead, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit; and these are one God." 4. "The three Persons of the Godhead are of one essence, consubstantial each with the others." 5. The three are differentiated in person and in office; and yet they possess their personal distinctions in complete sphericity and exercise their several offices in free and perfect conspiracy. 6. "And God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him, male and female created he them." 7. In the Manhead there are three persons, Adam, Eve and the Son; and these three are one Man. 8. The three are differentiated in person and in office; and yet in their normal estate, they progressively possess their personal distinctions in complete sphericity and discharge their several offices in free and perfect conspiracy. 9. The Son is the immediate offspring, who mediates the reproduction of Adam in the human race. In the larger sense the Son is the human race progenerate. 10. The Son in neither sense is in himself an organism, or solidarity; but as the Son (in latter sense) progressively achieves his sonship, he approaches the actualization of his own individual personality. The human race (progenerate) is therefore, a solidarity more or less completely actualized so long, and only so long, as it sustains its normal relation to its head, Adam. It is then in Adam that the human race (progenerate) has its principle of unity or solidarity. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Philosophy of Christ's Temptation: A Study in Interpretation Our Christian conceptions of religion are based primarily upon the Bible as the canon of our sa cred literature. This literature is one, but the interpretation of its meaning and implications have been many. Unfortunately, in our time there has been a rather slavish following of tradi tion in thought instead of a coming to first-hand consideration of the problems. This process may have resulted in inculcating truth, but it has like wise been the means of perpetuating error, and has issued in general barrenness of thought. We may reasonably assume that there is a unity of truth in this literature if we may but attain to it. It, however, makes no pretense at a system atic or organic presentation of thought, but is rather a mosaic made up of isolated incidents, or a compilation of disconnected conceptions. Ac cordingly, there is the perennial need of rationally presenting an orderly system of doctrine; that is, a philosophy of religion is the ultimate demand of thought. But we shall find that this is a seri ous matter, dependent upon the science of inter pretation, which is as complex and extensive as the problem of knowledge itself. And the fulness of human experience and the demands of reason must stand as the criterion of final validity.
