Excerpt from The Photography of Coloured Red Objects This book represents an attempt to put clearly the theory underlying the photography of coloured objects, and the application of that theory to those branches of practice which are of the most immediate importance. The need for such a book has been impressed upon me by my daily correspondence, and I have hopes that it may serve as a kind of text-book of the subject for many of my friends. While not employing purely scientific nomenclature and phraseology, I have made no attempt to be "practical," believing as I do, that the application of an ounce of accurate knowledge is worth a ton of unreasoning practice. I have also made no pretence as to being unbiassed, I have frankly discussed the products of my own firm, but I hope that the loss of generalisation caused by this procedure will be compensated by the advantage to be gained from definite information. It would not be possible, for instance, usefully to discuss the distribution of sensitiveness in "red-sensitive plates," whereas it is quite possible to discuss the distribution of sensitiveness in any particular plate. I am also likely to be biassed in argument, but I have not allowed myself to be consciously biassed, and have tried to be as fair as possible. I am very much obliged to many friends for the services chronicled below. Chapter VI. on "Photography for Reproduction," was written by Mr. A. J. Newton. Franoise, an Australian photographer, travels to Bhopal in India, where twenty years earlier a gas leak killed thousands. There she meets Naga, a Tibetan refugee whose family died in the disaster, and Arkay, a Scottish traveller battling addiction who has found solace in Buddhism. As a testament to their time together Franoise assembles photographs from their lives into an album, the Red Book. The photographs tell their stories of love, struggle and transformation - pointing to the people they have been and who they will become.

'Destined to be a classic . . . a sharply funny, clear-eyed examination, in the vein of Mary McCarthy's The Group, of the power and burden of privilege, the reality of being a modern woman and the lasting bonds of female friendship.' Vanity Fair Can a weekend change your life? Clover, Addison, Mia and Jane were college roommates until their graduation in 1989. Now, twenty years later, their lives are in free fall. Clover, once a securities broker with Lehman Brothers, living the Manhattan dream, is out of a job, newly married and fretting about her chances of having a baby. Addison's marriage to a novelist with writers' block is as stale as her artistic 'career'. Mia's acting ambitions never got off the ground, and she now stays home with her four children, renovating and acquiring faster than her Hollywood director husband can pay the bills. Jane, once the Paris bureau chief for a newspaper, now the victim of budget cuts, has been blindsided by different sorts of loss. The four friends have kept up with one another via the red book, a class report published every five years, in which alumni write brief updates about their lives. But there's the story we tell the world, and then there's the real story, as the classmates arriving at their twentieth reunion with their families, their histories, their dashed dreams and secret longings, will discover over the course of an epoch-ending, score-settling, unforgettable weekend.

The highly-anticipated sequel to Sunday Times bestseller The Black Book ___________________________ Detective Billy Harney exposes an evil lurking deep within his city - but it also brings his own past demons to light... To Billy Harney, the newest member of Chicago PD's elite strike force, getting shot in the head, stalked by a state's attorney, and accused of murder by his fellow cops is all part of breaking a case. So, when a drive-by shooting on the Chicago's West Side turns political, he doesn't shy away from leading the investigation. As the easy answers prove to be the wrong ones, Harney's quest to expose the evil that's rotting the city from the inside out takes him to the one place he vowed never to return to: his own troubled past. ___________________________ Readers think The Red Book is one of James Patterson's best ever thrillers: 'One of the best books by James Patterson that I have read, and I've read them all.'
