An atmospheric phenomenon is considered as 'explained' when we have succeeded in deducing it on the basis of accepted principles of physics. (H. Ertel, Methods and problems of dynamical meteorolo gy,p. l) Until recently, noctilucent clouds were regarded merely as a curious atmos pheric phenomenon, the occurrence of which aroused only limited scientific attention. However, in the last two decades the interest they have been given has markedly increased. The clouds, usually pale blue in colour, may be seen on a clear night at high latitudes. Typical examples are illustrated in the book. Clouds looking like these in daytime would be classified as cirrostratus. What sets noctilucent clouds apart is their occurrence in the middle of the night, their very obvious pale blue colour, and their disappearance into the dawn close to the onset of civil twilight when the Sun is 6° below the horizon. as being set apart from ordinary Noctilucent clouds were first recognized clouds in 1884/1885 and in a series of sightings that followed their return in the summer of 1885. That year marked the beginning of observations and the interpretation of twilight phenomena. The impetus came from the extraordi nary Krakatoa eruption, which was not only one of the most spectacular volcanic eruptions in recorded history, but which also turned out to be a startling event in atmospheric science with repercussions even in our time.

Project PoSSUM, an acronym for Polar Suborbital Science in the Upper Mesosphere, is the aeronomy program within the International Institute for Astronautical Sciences, a 501(c)(3) non-profit international research program. PoSSUM employs commercial spacecraft, aircraft, and high-altitude balloons to study rare "space clouds" called noctilucent clouds. These elusive clouds can help scientists address critical questions about the Earth's climate, but they can only be seen from polar latitudes during a small window of time in the summer. Noctilucent clouds are of keen interest to climatologists because their increasing presence is widely believed to be attributable to increasing concentrations of carbon dioxide and methane in the mesosphere. Further, these clouds offer a prominent observable that can help address questions pertaining to reentry vehicles and of low-density atmospheres on other planets through techniques of comparative planetology. This manual is intended for the student or professional interested in human spaceflight and how it may be applied to upper-atmospheric research. This manual provides an overview of Project PoSSUM, an introduction to the mesosphere and noctilucent cloud science, remote sensing, suborbital cinematography and imagery system, spaceflight physiology and hypoxia awareness, life support systems and spacesuit operations, fundamental solar mechanics, and mission planning and simulation techniques.

This book is an introduction to the use of the ultraviolet for remote sensing of the Earth's atmosphere. It covers the Earth's UV radiative environment, experimental techniques, and current applications. it is my intention to provide the information needed to "make a first approximation" concerning the use of the ultraviolet and to provide access through the literature for a more thorough study. * Contains recent UV applications not previously available in book form such as ozone, auroral images, and ionospheric sensing * Features broad coverage of fundamentals of atmospheric geophysics with values for fluxes, cross-sections, and radiances * Covers techniques that illustrate principles of measurements with typical values * Contains numerous references to original literature

The Upper Atmosphere written by Richard A. Craig and has been published by Elsevier this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-06-03 with Science categories.

The Upper Atmosphere: Meteorology and Physics focuses on the study of the characteristics, movements, composition, and observations of the upper atmosphere. The book first offers information on the meteorological conditions in the lower stratosphere and the structure and circulation of the upper stratosphere and the mesosphere. Topics include balloon sounding systems, climatology of the lower stratosphere, disturbed circulation of the lower stratosphere, rocket measurements, and frequent measurements with balloons and meteorological rockets. The text then ponders on the sun's radiation and the upper atmosphere and composition of the stratosphere and mesosphere. The manuscript elaborates on the composition and structure of the thermosphere, including photochemical processes, diffusion, composition and structure measurements, and structure of the thermosphere. The text also ponders on radiative processes and heat transfer; atmospheric tides and winds in the lower thermosphere; and transport of properties in the upper atmosphere. The publication is a valuable source of information for readers interested in the meteorology and physics of the upper atmosphere.
