The Biological Clock describes the rhythmic processes in a great variety of plants and animals. This book is an outgrowth of the 1969 James Arthur Lecture Series on "Time and its Mysteries" held at New York University. This three-chapter work begins with the basic principles of biological rhythms and clocks, along with various diagrams to illustrate some aspects of circadian rhythms in animals. The second chapter discusses the hypothesis of environmental timing of the clock. This chapter explores numerous research studies on phenomenon of biological rhythms, the nature of the rhythmic mechanism, and hormonal regulation. The third chapter examines the cellular-biochemical clock hypothesis and its contribution in the progress of understanding the complexity of biological rhythm. This book is intended primarily for biologists, behaviorists, and researchers.

This monograph is limited to considerations of the biological measurement of time in which unicellular organisms, as well as cells of higher plants, animals, and man utilize periods of approximately 24 hours. The author's intention is to discuss the present state of our knowledge of the physiological nature of this clock and the manifold means by which the organism uses this clock. Since new developments are occuring so rapidly in this field, it was necessary to revise extensively all of the chapters. The author is deeply indebted to his son-in-law, Dr. RICHARD M. FRANKLIN of the Public Health Research Institute of the City of New York, for his assistance with the revisions in this new English edition, as well as his review of that portion of the text adapted from the first English edition. This book is not intended for that group of specialists who are quite familiar with the terminology and jargon of the field of circadian rhythms. Therefore I have avoided employing the symbols, abbreviations, etc. normally used in this small circle of researchers. In this manner I hope to attract new workers into this fascinating field, workers who will contribute through their discoveries to a speedy outdating of this presentation. Popular science at its most exciting: the breaking new world of chronobiology - understanding the rhythm of life in humans and all plants and animals. The entire natural world is full of rhythms. The early bird catches the worm -and migrates to an internal calendar. Dormice hibernate away the winter. Plants open and close their flowers at the same hour each day. Bees search out nectar-rich flowers day after day. There are cicadas that can breed for only two weeks every 17 years. And in humans: why are people who work anti-social shifts more illness prone and die younger? What is jet-lag and can anything help? Why do teenagers refuse to get up in the morning, and are the rest of us really 'larks' or 'owls'? Why are most people born (and die) between 3am-5am? And should patients be given medicines (and operations) at set times of day, because the body reacts so differently in the morning, evening and at night? The answers lie in our biological clocks the mechanisms which give order to all living things. They impose a structure that enables us to change our behaviour in relation to the time of day, month or year. They are reset at sunrise and sunset each day to link astronomical time with an organism's internal time.

This book is a translation of the second Gennan edition (1963). In a few places modifications have been made to take into account important works that have since appeared. The aim has not been an all-embracing survey of experimental facts on the subject, but rather to emphasize the physiological kinship of phenomena having a wide variety of names, and to show thereby the great extent to which the physio logical clock influences quite different phenomena in the "behaviour" of uni cellular organisms, of higher plants, of animals, and of human beings. Furthennore, an attempt has been made to make as thorough an analysis of the mechanism of the clock as is possible at the present time. The first draft of the translation was made by Dr. LARS LORCHER (now of the of Radiation and Organisms, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D. C.). Division The whole script was then thoroughly revised and corrected by Prof. Dr. FRANK SALISBURY (Department of Botany, Colorado State University, Fort Collins, Colorado). Finally, I made amendments and additions to the presentation, as they seemed to me to be necessary, in order to keep abreast of recent developments. Mr. DEREK MCCULLOCH (at present Lecturer in English Language in the Uni versity of Tiibingen) then checked the manuscript. I should like to thank all those involved in the translation for their efforts.

This book is a concise, comprehensive and up-to-date account of fundamental concepts and potential applications of biological timekeeping mechanisms in animals and humans. It also discusses significant aspects of the organization and importance of timekeeping mechanisms in both groups. Divided into seven sections, it addresses important aspects including fundamental concepts; animal and human clocks; clock interactions; clocks and metabolism and immune functions; pineal, melatonin and timekeeping; and clocks, photoperiodism and seasonal behaviours. The book also focuses on biological clock applications in a 24x7 human society, particularly in connection with life-style associated disorders like obesity and diabetes. It is a valuable resource for advanced undergraduates, researchers and professionals engaged in the study of the science of biological timekeeping.

Rhythmic changes in physiology and behaviour within a 24 h period occur in living organisms on earth to meet the challenges associated with the daily changes in the external environment. The circadian pacemaker responsible for the temporal internal organisation and the generation of endogenous rhythms of approximately 24 h is located in the hypothalamic suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) in mammals. The endogenous period generated by the pacemaker is close to, but generally not equal to 24 h and the biological clock therefore needs to be daily adjusted (entrained) by external cues. The daily alteration of light and darkness due to the rotation of our planet on its own axis in relation to the sun is the most prominent "zeitgeber" which adjusts the phase of the circadian rhythms to the astronomical day length, a process known as photoentrainment. In mammals, light is perceived only through photoreceptors located in the retina. Light information is mediated to the SCN via the retinohypothalamic tract (RHT) by activation of the classical photoreceptor system of rods and cones and a more recently identified system of intrinsic photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs) using melanopsin as a photopigment.

Each organism has its own internal biological clock, which is reset by environmental cues (Zeitgebers), thus keeping it synchronized with the external environment. It is a chemically based oscillating system within cells, relying on molecular feedback loops. Circadian biological clocks exist in most organisms. What is so special about the clock in f
