From the forest jumps the deer. Judge grabs the shotgun and shoots the animal twice. Deer continues to run. Suddenly a shot is heard from behind the trees. Deer jumps. Another shot - and the animal falls dead. There appears Leather Stocking - Bumppo Natty. He is old, but still looks strong. Natty welcomes Temple and slightly jeers at his unsuccessful shot. Differentiated book- It has a historical context with research of the time-The novel begins on a windy January day in the fictional city of Hannover, Nebraska, sometime between 1883 and 1890. A young woman named Alexandra Bergson has come to the small town to consult a doctor about her dying father. In the city, his younger brother Emil's cat is trapped on a telegraph pole, and Carl Linstrum, a thin, melancholic teenager friendly to Alexandra, climbs on the pole to retrieve it. In the city pharmacy, a cute and flirtatious girl named Marie is the toast of the local nobility. Together, the Bergsons and Carl drive their car to neighboring farms in the vast, dark and wild country of the prairies around Hanover known as the Divide. At home, Alexandra talks to her father John Bergson, who lies on his deathbed.Bergson emigrated from Sweden, and has spent years fighting the land to pay a mortgage and scratch a farm. Now, he decides to leave his land under the care of his wise and determined eldest son, Alexandra, since his sons, Oscar and Lou, are not inspired, and his wife, although stereotypically hardworking, is quite bored. Before he dies, John gives his children practical advice to manage the farm and puts Alexandra's responsibility on his brothers.

The Pioneers; Or, The Sources of the Susquehanna by James Fenimore Cooper The Pioneers begins with a judge, the Marmaduke Temple, sledding back through the deep Christmas snow of the mountains. He has gone to find his young marriageable daughter Elizabeth from school in New York, and is returning to the city he founded, Templeton, designed by a local architect. In the opening scenes, the judge and his daughter meet the elderly frontier man, Leatherstocking, who is out hunting with an attractive assistant. The judge shoots a deer that runs nearby but accidentally wounds the young man with Leatherstocking. Dismayed at his own clumsiness, the judge offers the young man to take him to the small settlement and medical care at the local sawmills. Thus sets in motion an essentially joyous love story between the judge's daughter and the shy but tremendously competent young woodcutter, all framed in a series of vivid scenes involving the largely comic characters that inhabit the town. The focus on town life and town "guys" reminded me of Thomas Hardy's first humorous novel, Under The Greenwood Tree.
