Excerpt from The Place of Washington in the History of Western Pennsylvania Washington made six visits to Western Pennsylvania: in 1753- 1754-1755-1758-1770 and 1781; and on three of them he spent some time on the site of the city of Pittsburgh, viz.: in 1753, 1758, and 1770. His first public service was his trip to Western Pennsylvania in 1753 as bearer of a letter from Governor Dinwiddic to Legardeur de la St. Pierre, the French commandant, at Venango. This and three subsequent visits to Western Pennsylvania - 1754, 1755, 1758 - all had to do with the matter of the contest between the English and French for the possession of the Ohio Valley. To my mind, the most interesting of all Washington's visits, and the one which appeals to the imagination most, is his first visit, in 1753, when he carried Governor Dinwiddle's letter to the French commandant, warning the French out of the country of the Ohio Valley. At this time Washington was a youth of 21, inured to the life of the forest by four years' service as surveyor and adjutant-general of the Virginia Militia, which did much to fit him for the undertaking. Before attempting to describe this journey, let us look at the course of events which had given rise to Governor Dinwiddle's demand, through his messenger, Washington, that the French should leave the country of the Ohio Valley. Excerpt from Old Westmoreland: A History of Western Pennsylvania During the Revolution This book represents an effort to tell the revolutionary history of the Western Pennsylvania border; to describe the trials, the sacrifices, the errors and the heroisms of the frontiersmen, in their conflicts with tories, British par tisans and savages, during the years when Washington and his generals were fighting for independence along the Atlantic seaboard. The American Revolution covered many fields of action, and the operations on each con tributed to the grand result. The men who defended the western border against the savage tribes were doing their work essential to the cause of freedom as well as the ragged Continentals who faced British and Hessian battalions in New York or New Jersey. Naturally the operations in the East, where the main conflict raged and the issue was decided, have received the chief attention of historians; but the struggles on the west ern frontier have been unduly neglected. Some attention has been given to the revolutionary history of the New York and Tennessee frontiers, but no book tells, in con nected form, of the important operations in that great trans montane region of which Ft. Pitt was the center, during the years from 1775 to 1783. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Western Pennsylvania Historical Magazine, Vol. 5 In the olden time Pittsburgh was known indiscriminately as Pittsburgh and Fort Pitt, the latter designation being most generally used. The story of those far-away days has been told before, but as Sir Charles Wakefield of England is about to present to the city, a statue of William Pitt, first Earl of Chatham, for whom the place was named, it will not be inappropriate to repeat the tale, together with such incidents as may have been overlooked, or which did not come to the knowledge of the earlier historians. The story of the struggle for supremacy in America between the French and the English is of romantic interest. The French claimed the interior of the continent by right of discovery by LaSalle. The English claims were more comprehensive and just as inconclusive as those of the French. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The First Souvenir Christmas Book of the Historical Society of Western Pennsylvania The red man ofthe forest was still to be seen at times. Many a good, warm dinner was given to one and another of them, as they strayed here and there, by pitying hearts and loving hands - as the safely-housed white man in a measure realized the feelings of the poor Indian, a wanderer where once he roamed in undisputed possession. Often a fine lot of game - which the arrow of the son of the forest, true to its mark, had brought to his feet-was given to the h0st and hostess at whose fireside he had received a kindly welcome. The several travelers' inns were well patronized by the many journeying eastward and westward, perhaps the most favored being Samuel Semple's Tavern, which had been the stopping place of the Father of His Country in 1770, and praised by him for its comforts. It boasted of several stores, where could be obtained everything found in a general country store, and besides its generals and majors, counted ministers, doctors and lawyers, among its inhabitants. A feature of this thriving town was the general feeling of hospitality and neighborly kindness shown by its inhabitants. General Morgan, so famous in history, was living in Washington county at this time, and his brother-in-law, General Neville, and Major Craig, his son-in law, were property owners and inhabitants of the new borough. In those early times there were many social gatherings and merry-makings among the people, and the beauty and grace of the wives and daughters, in their quaint and beautiful attire, would not be thrown in the shade by the maids and matrons of our large and thriving city to-day.
