Entre lo más destacado de la obra del poeta de Puerto Rico (patriota, abogado, orador y político) José de Diego (1866-1918) se encuentra los libros Pomarrosas (1904), Jovillos, Coplas de estudiantes (1916) y Cantos de pitirre (publicado póstumamente en 1949). Uno de sus sueños era establecer una confederación de islas hispano-parlantes en el Caribe. Sus poemas pueden clasificarse dentro del romanticismo, en una etapa, y dentro del realismo, en otra.
