The Great Architect of All Reality, another name for the unknown source that created the foundation for existence, had the wherewithal or playfulness to riddle creation with an eclectic mix of contradictory forces in humans and nature. In its infinite wisdom or ultimate boredom, the Architect instructed evolution to create humans and some say this act added stupidity to the divine designers mix! While stupidity serves a critical role in helping us discern the behaviors that stall our climb up the evolutionary ladder, it is the active pursuit of connection, one of the Architects hidden ingredients, that allows us to scale the ladder of evolution with speed and begin reconciling the appearance of differences between us. Connection exposes the illusions of separation and provides the opportunity to reunite diametrically opposed perspectives we inherit or acquire through our social, cultural, religious, and ethnic conditioning. The poems in this book are the insightful expressions of an author who is passionate about creating harmony between humans, the most complex of the Architects riddles. Through his words, the author attempts to elevate and worship the ordinary moments in life; expose the poisons in becoming a political or religious ideologue; explore the strained relationship between the intellect and the heart; ponder the cosmic aspects of patriotism; reveal the invisible demons of love; and convey sensitive, but instructive, snippets about race and color. Mixed in with these thought-provoking utterances is the authors ailing sense of humor, offering the opportunity to view serious matters through the lens of comedy. Through the solemn and amusing prose, there is an opportunity to begin new conversations that may help us acknowledge and, through introspection, challenge our silent conditioninga first step in finding the keys to meaningful connection and harmony in all human affairs.

The world's gone mad and the people of the world have lost their minds. Turn on your TV, radio, cell phone, iPad, or the Internet. Read a newspaper. Listen closely to the outrageous conversations between your colleagues who gather at the workplace water cooler, or the ghastly chats of strangers in America's elevators. Watch the five, six, seven, or eight o'clock news on any day of the week. What you will find, with much certitude, is a sound bite, brief exchange, exclusive report, or eyewitness account of a terrible thing a human being has inflicted on another. There's no hiding from the gruesome deeds, unthinkable cruelties, genocides, massacres, terrorist bombings, beheadings, or planned disenfranchisements committed by members of our species. The atrocities, injustices, and everyday indifferences seem to never end. Some people may numb themselves to the craziness and go on with their lives. Others will become angry or depressed or feel a sense of powerlessness. A few civic-minded folks will write their congresswoman or become deeply involved in politics while their neighbors may proselytize, accumulate firearms, or join some type of organization to help save the world from the everyday madness. Yet others - the irreverent vegetarians, the peace-loving agnostics, the politically-incorrect, gray-haired or balding, beyond middle-aged idealists whose waistlines are slightly or strikingly protruding - truly care about living in a world where violence and injustice are the exceptions. And they do not accept feeling powerless about ending man's inhumanity towards man. These nonconformists fight back with their imaginations, odd sense of humor, and their quirky attempts at satire. Some people believe that God or "his" only son is the sole answer to the mayhem on earth; that The Almighty, the main character of the Scriptures, is singlehandedly capable of fixing our problems and healing the world. The longstanding dispute about "his" existence and supernatural abilities will go on forever. But what if God was real and what if, by some miracle, "he" transferred all of "his" powers to one of these politically-incorrect, nonconformist senior citizens with the caveat that they had only twenty-four hours to fix things. What would s/he do?

Gold Medal Winner for Poetry and Special Honours Award for Best of Anthology at the 2020 Nautilus Book Awards. One language is falling silent every two weeks. Half of the 7,000 languages spoken in the world today will be lost by the end of this century. With the loss of these languages, we also lose the unique poetic traditions of their speakers and writers. Poems from the Edge of Extinction gathers together 50 poems in languages from around the world that have been identified as endangered; it is a celebration of our linguistic diversity and a reminder of our commonalities and the fundamental role verbal art plays in human life around the world. With poems by influential, award-winning poets such as US poet laureate Joy Harjo, Hawad, Valzhyna Mort, and Jackie Kay, this anthology offers a unique insight into both languages and poetry, taking the reader on an emotional, life-affirming journey into the culture of these beautiful languages. Each poem appears in its original form, alongside an English translation, and is accompanied by a commentary about the language, the poet and the poem - in a vibrant celebration of life, diversity, language, and the enduring power of poetry. This timely collection is passionately edited by widely published poet and UK National Poetry Librarian, Chris McCabe, who is also the founder of the Endangered Poetry Project, a major project launched by London's Southbank Centre to collect poetry in the world's disappearing languages, and introduced by Dr Mandana Seyfeddinipur, Director of the Endangered Languages Documentation Programme and the Endangered Languages Archive at SOAS University of London, and Dr Martin Orwin, Senior Lecturer in Somali and Amharic, SOAS University of London. "A Flask of Wine, a Book of Verse — and Thou, Beside me, singing in the Wilderness," is only one of the memorable verses from Edward FitzGerald's translations of poems by the 11th century Persian sage Omar Khayyám. This magnificent version of The Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám reproduces the edition published by Hodder & Stoughton of London in 1909, in which the timeless poems are accompanied by full-color images by Golden Age illustrator Edmund Dulac. Critics and collectors have long debated which book represents the peak of Dulac's career, and many agree that his affinity for Persian art makes this gloriously illustrated volume a strong contender.

Winner NATIONAL JEWISH BOOK AWARDS in Contemporary Jewish Life & Practice Myra H. Kraft Memorial Award A crucial new lens on repentance, atonement, forgiveness, and repair from harm—from personal transgressions to our culture’s most painful and unresolved issues American culture focuses on letting go of grudges and redemption narratives instead of the perpetrator’s obligations or recompense for harmed parties. As survivor communities have pointed out, these emphases have too often only caused more harm. But Danya Ruttenberg knew there was a better model, rooted in the work of the medieval philosopher Maimonides. For Maimonides, upon whose work Ruttenberg elaborates, forgiveness is much less important than the repair work to which the person who caused harm is obligated. The word traditionally translated as repentance really means something more like return, and in this book, returning is a restoration, as much as is possible, to the victim, and, for the perpetrator of harm, a coming back, in humility and intentionality, to behaving as the person we might like to believe we are. Maimonides laid out 5 steps: naming and owning harm; starting to change/transformation; restitution and accepting consequences; apology; and making different choices. Applying this lens to both our personal relationships and some of the most significant and painful issues of our day, including systemic racism and the legacy of enslavement, sexual violence and harassment in the wake of #MeToo, and Native American land rights, On Repentance and Repair helps us envision a way forward. Rooted in traditional Jewish concepts while doggedly accessible and available to people from any, or no, religious background, On Repentance and Repair is a book for anyone who cares about creating a country and culture that is more whole than the one in which we live, and for anyone who has been hurt or who is struggling to take responsibility for their mistakes.

This "gorgeously written" National Book Award finalist is a dazzling, heart-rending story of an oil rig worker whose closest friend goes missing, plunging him into isolation and forcing him to confront his past (NPR, One of the Best Books of the Year). One night aboard an oil drilling platform in the Atlantic, Waclaw returns to his cabin to find that his bunkmate and companion, Mátyás, has gone missing. A search of the rig confirms his fear that Mátyás has fallen into the sea. Grief-stricken, he embarks on an epic emotional and physical journey that takes him to Morocco, to Budapest and Mátyás's hometown in Hungary, to Malta, Italy, and finally to the mining town of his childhood in Germany. Waclaw's encounters along the way with other lost and yearning souls—Mátyás's angry, grieving half-sister; lonely rig workers on shore leave; a truck driver who watches the world change from his driver's seat—bring us closer to his origins while also revealing the problems of a globalized economy dependent on waning natural resources. High as the Waters Rise is a stirring exploration of male intimacy, the nature of memory and grief, and the cost of freedom—the story of a man who stands at the margins of a society from which he has profited little, though its functioning depends on his labor.

Qur'ānic Studies Today brings together specialists in the field of Islamic studies to provide a range of essays that reflect the depth and breadth of scholarship on the Qur'ān. Combining theoretical and methodological clarity with close readings of qur’ānic texts, these contributions provide close analysis of specific passages, themes, and issues within the Qurʾān, even as they attend to the disciplinary challenges within the field of qur’ānic studies today. Chapters are arranged into three parts, treating specific figures appearing in the Qurʾān, analysing particular suras, and finally reflecting on the Qur’ān and its "others." They explore the internal dimensions and interior chronology of the Qur’ān as text, its possible conversations with biblical and non-biblical traditions in Late Antiquity, and its role as scripture in modern exegesis and recitation. Together, they are indispensable for students and scholars who seek an understanding of the Qur’ān founded on the most recent scholarly achievements. Offering both a reflection of and a reflection on the discipline of qur’ānic studies, the strong, scholarly examinations of the Qur’ān in this volume provide a valuable contribution to Islamic and qur’ānic studies.
