Marvelous Things Overheard written by Ange Mlinko and has been published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-07-22 with Poetry categories.

A vibrant and eclectic collection from a stunningly mature young poet "The world—the time has come to say it, though the news will not be welcome to everyone—has no intention of abandoning enchantment altogether." Roberto Calasso's words in Literature and the Gods remind us that, in an age of reason, of mechanization, of alienation, of rote drudgery, we still seek out the transcendent, the marvelous. Ange Mlinko's luminous fourth collection is both a journey toward and the space of that very enchantment. Marvelous Things Overheard takes its title from a collection of ancient rumors about the lands of the Mediterranean. Mlinko, who lived at the American University of Beirut and traveled to Greece and Cyprus, has penned poems that seesaw between the life lived in those ancient and strife-torn places, and the life imagined through its literature: from The Greek Anthology to the Mu'allaqat. Throughout, Mlinko grapples with the passage of time on two levels: her own aging (alongside the growing up of her children) and the incontrovertible evidence of millennia of human habitation. This is an assured and revealing collection, one that readers will want to seek refuge in again and again.

About the Book: ‘Poetry is when an emotion has found its thought and the thought has found words’ - Robert Frost. It is not without a reason that humans call the best of everything ‘poetry’. In the famous romance novel, The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks, the hero calls his lover a ‘living poem’. Likewise, our best literature (irrespective of its form), movies, arts, places, food, and even wine is called ‘poetic’. No matter how scientifically advanced or technologically sophisticated we get, humans will always read and write poetry to express their emotions and feelings. We don’t read and write poetry because it’s fancy. We read and write poetry because we are members of the human race filled with passion. Medicine, law, business, and engineering are noble pursuits necessary to sustain life. Poetry, beauty, romance and love make this life worth living. With immense pride and joy that the entire team at StoryMirror selected, edited, compiled, designed, printed and published this beautiful collection of poems, “Zenith of Thoughts”. The poets who co-authored this anthology come from different walks of life. Their age, gender, profession, qualification, theme and genre might differ, but all of them have brought their emotions, imagination, passion and life experiences to these poems. These poems are sure to strike a chord, touch your heart and soothe your soul. Hope you have a great reading experience!

Marvelous Possessions written by Stephen Greenblatt and has been published by University of Chicago Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-11-26 with History categories.

Marvelous Possessions is a study of the ways in which Europeans of the late Middle Ages and the early modern period represented non-European peoples and took possession of their lands, in particular the New World. In a series of innovative readings of travel narratives, judicial documents, and official reports, Stephen Greenblatt shows that the experience of the marvelous, central to both art and philosophy, was cunningly yoked by Columbus and others to the service of colonial appropriation. He argues that the traditional symbolic actions and legal rituals through which European sovereignty was asserted were strained to the breaking point by the unprecedented nature of the discovery of the New World. But the book also shows that the experience of the marvelous is not necessarily an agent of empire: in writers as different as Herodotus, Jean de Léry, and Montaigne—and notably in Mandeville's Travels, the most popular travel book of the Middle Ages—wonder is a sign of a remarkably tolerant recognition of cultural difference. Marvelous Possession is not only a collection of the odd and exotic through which Stephen Greenblatt powerfully conveys a sense of the marvelous, but also a highly original extension of his thinking on a subject that has occupied him throughout his career. The book reaches back to the ancient Greeks and forward to the present to ask how it is possible, in a time of disorientation, hatred of the other, and possessiveness, to keep the capacity for wonder from being poisoned? "A marvellous book. It is also a compelling and a powerful one. Nothing so original has ever been written on European responses to 'The wonder of the New World.'"—Anthony Pagden, Times Literary Supplement "By far the most intellectually gripping and penetrating discussion of the relationship between intruders and natives is provided by Stephen Greenblatt's Marvelous Possessions."—Simon Schama, The New Republic "For the most engaging and illuminating perspective of all, read Marvelous Possessions."—Laura Shapiro, Newsweek
