In the bestselling literary tradition of Lewis Thomas's Lives of a Cell and James Watson's The Double Helix, Poetry of the Universe is a delightful and compelling narrative charting the evolution of mathematical ideas that have helped to illuminate the nature of the observable universe. In a richly anecdotal fashion, the book explores teh leaps of imagination and vision in mathematics that have helped pioneer our understanding of the world around us.

Motto: “I am free, always free,/Because this I want to be!/Freedom’s what I enjoy;/It is the truth and joy!” In Poems of the Universe, the author searches to find answers to fundamental questions regarding existence, feelings, life, soul, spirit, and our universe. He presents philosophical and psychological views about our destiny on Spaceship Earth. The poet exposes an outlook on our universe in a large time frame. He seeks a real sense of, and the true aim of, life. Also, he analyzes, with passion and candor, human nature and feelings. From these lyrics emerge a great wish to live and fight for progress. Poems of the Universe shows the reader that many common things are, in reality, more complicated then they seem. The book is his search to discover the hidden, simple truth about our universe as a whole. “Without space and time,/The spirit becomes prime./But the great soul/Brings a higher goal.”

This book presents a unique and interesting introduction to the wonders of the known universe written in the form of verse. It is a reflection of nearly sixty years of observation by the author and his perception and interpretation of all things universally related. It makes statements, poses questions and offers theories. There is a poetic elegance in the way in which the universe functions with every galaxy spinning and revolving around each other and the stars within those galaxies dancing likewise in seemingly perfect synchronicity. Every element of it from the largest to the smallest apparently depends on the other for its existence. It can be likened to a vast cosmic rhythmic dance. With just a little imagination the haunting strains of Ravels' Bolero can be heard in the background and the majestic scene compared to the perfect elegance of Torvill and Deans' ballet-like interpretation of that piece on ice. For those who are interested in the subject and who may be intent upon studying one or more aspects in greater detail the verses when memorized may help them to more readily call to mind the information and facts contained therein. There are almost 100 full color images scattered throughout, which are repeated with notes at the end of the book for the more technically minded who might wish to delve further; otherwise just enjoy the poetry of the universe. If this book stimulates reflection and discussion and helps to generate greater interest by the general public in the poetic grandeur of our universe then it will have served its' objective well.

Wordsworth And The Great System written by Geoffrey Durrant and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-02-04 with Literary Criticism categories.

Professor Durrant has two aims in his book, First, he shows that Wordsworth was less hostile to the world-view of the scientist than has been supposed: on the contrary, his poetic vision is from one point of view a translation into terms of feeling and perception of a systematic view of the universe. Second, examination of individual poems reveals a poetic language in which that system is translated into images: star, rock, flower, tree, mountain, cloud, lake, sea. The poems are not sentimental anecdotes, they are 'acts of mind', which turn this world-view into feelings, expressed in a language not far from that of every day. This is inherently a tragic insight; for it sees the individual's consciousness as delight in the natural order, which inevitably brings the death which ends the consciousness. In his great period, from 1798 to 1805, Wordsworth held that vision steadily and whole.

`Therefore this terror and darkness of the mind Not by the sun's rays, nor the bright shafts of day, Must be dispersed, as is most necessary, But by the face of nature and her laws.' Lucretius' poem On the Nature of the Universe combines a scientific and philosophical treatise with some of the greatest poetry ever written. With intense moral fervour Lucretius demonstrates to humanity that in death there is nothing to fear since the soul is mortal, and the world and everything in it is governed not by the gods, but by the mechanical laws of nature. By believing this, men can live in peace of mind and happiness. Lucretius bases his argument on the atomic theory expounded by the Greek philosopher Epicurus. His poem explores sensation, sex, cosmology, meteorology, and geology through acute observation of the beauties of the natural world and with moving sympathy for man's place in it. Sir Ronald Melville's accessible and accurate verse translation is complemented by an introduction and notes situating Lucretius' scientific theories within the thought of 1st century BCE Rome and discussing the Epicurean philosophy that was his inspiration and why the issues Lucretius' poem raisies about the scientific and poetical views of the world continue to be important.
