At that time we anticipated that not more than a year or two would be needed to complete the edition. But the nature of the editorial additions called for by our second volume has caused long delays, and involved repeated reconsideration of our original scheme. By far the most extensive of the poems to be edited was Boomer-day; and its eleven thousand lines are packed with direct and indirect allusions to the familiar or recondite matters which constituted the intellectual equipment of a cultured Scottish gentleman of Alexander's day. It seemed, therefore, more convenient and more proper to track these allusions by a desultory course of wide reading rather than by forthright hunting: and so the years have gone by. The task of collecting for the first time, and editing the works of an old and neglected poet, is no easy one, especially when, as in the present instance, so many collations required to be made. The completion of the work will, however, be given to the public with all speed compatible with careful collation and careful editing. As will be seen, the text of the present volume has been given from the latest editions published during the Author's lifetime, all of which bear evident marks of the most careful supervision on his part, and the variations given in the foot-notes are the most important in the earlier editions. In one or two instances, a few typographical errors have been corrected in the later text (after due comparison with the earlier), but this correction was rarely necessary. The first edition was issued at Edinburgh in 1614. The title page is as follows: - "Doomes-day; or, the Great Day of the Lords Ivdgement, by Sr. William Alexander, Knight. Printed by Andro Hart, and are to be solde at his shop on the north side of the high Street, a litle beneath the Crosse. Anno Dom. 1614." 4 to. Mr. W. Carew Hazlitt, in his Handbook to the Popular Poetical and Dramatic Literature of Great Britain, London, 1867, mentions an edition in quarto, published at London in the same year, which, in all probability, would be the same as the above, with a London imprint; the only other edition, however, that the present editor has seen, is that included in 77 i Recreations with the Muses, 1637. The Edinburgh edition of 1614 contains only the first four hours; the alterations made in that portion in the copy published in 1637 (which is here reprinted) were not considered worth notice, as, although considerable, they are generally only verbal.
