This book analyzes the struggle of working people for improvement in minimum wage in Nigeria. It also looks into how working people are being shortchanged by the capitalist government and employers under the guise of implementing minimum wage. It links the issue of minimum wage in Nigeria with the political economy of Nigeria as a third world country. It was written as a contribution to the intellectual and ideological debates in working class and anti-capitalist movement. It not only raises issues concerning the political economy of Nigeria's capitalism but also the strategies needed by the working class movement and activists in challenging this obviously unacceptable capitalist state. Centrally, this book argues for a revolutionary, democratically organized working people's party to champion this cause. It is the contention of the writer that working people cannot continue to vote their enemies to power every four years, only to fight the anti-workers' policies of those governments. Why don't they have their party? Indeed, strike actions in themselves raise the question of political power as the whole country is at a standstill. Globally, movements are growing against capitalism, one hopes this book contribute to the growing consciousness of working class people and youths for a better society, away from the current iniquitous capitalist system, especially its backward form we have in Nigeria, nay third world countries, and the world at large. This book is a vital material for workers, labour activists, trade unionists, civil society practitioners, scholars and academics, students of history, politics and social science, and all those interested in the political economy of Nigeria.

I evaluate the effects of the 2016 minimum wage hike in Peru on the approval of government performance. My identification strategy exploits the regional heterogeneity in the share of workers directly affected by the increase to implement a series of difference-in-differences specifications. For every percentage point increase in the share of treated workers, the approval of the central government (i.e., the president) also increases by a percentage point. I find a partial spillover effect to other levels of government. These results are robust to a number of alternative specifications and falsification tests, and cannot be explained by the results of the 2016 presidential elections. My findings suggest that the main mechanisms behind these causal effects are improvements in subjective living conditions and observed labor market performance.

Nigeria, once a resourceful regional power, has been caught in a spiral of economic and political decay. This once-promising nation is now seen as an international pariah, partly as a result of the gross human rights violations of its government, but largely because of the failure to generate a political leadership capable of containing and reversing rather than aggravating the process of decline. Union Power in the Nigerian Textile Industry covers developments in Nigeria during two trying decades of deepening economic and political crisis. It is not, however, an additional tale of decay. It highlights the remarkable progress which has been achieved, in spite of this decline, in industrial adjustment, institution building, and conflict regulation. Gunilla Andrae and Bjorn Beckman follow Nigeria's leading manufacturing sector, the textile industry, from the heyday of the oil boom through successive phases of adjustment and liberalization, suggesting that industrialization is still very much on the African agenda. The focus is on the trade unions, their role in industrial restructuring and their ability to defend workers' interests and rights. Union Power in the Nigerian Textile Industry examines the successful institutionalization of a union-based labor regime, defying global trends to the contrary. The authors explore the origins of union power in the national and local political economy, pointing to the mediation between the militant self-organization of the workers and the strategies of state and capital. They draw on extensive field work, interviews with managers, unionists and workers, and massive documentation from internal union sources.

Minimum wage hikes express our sympathy for the working poor and our solidarity with them. But their importance is largely symbolic. The net effects of moderate increases in wage floors are vanishingly small. Statutory wage minimums work like taxes on labor, with their proceeds paid directly to low-wage workers and their costs shifted forward to consumers. Consequently, their distributional effects on the burden side are like those of sales taxes. Variations in state minimums appear to be driven in good measure by a combination of partisan political control and opportunities for burden shifting to nonresidents.
