The Portland Building stands out among the buildings of downtown Portland, Oregon as a postmodern collage of historical references and symbols. This colorful and spirited addition to the city was designed by Michael Graves and built in 1982 as administrative offices for the City of Portland. Despite international recognition for its groundbreaking design, it faced problems with its structure, exterior, and operational systems that repairs alone could not overcome. This books tells the evolving story of the Portland Building, honoring the history of the building and documenting the expanding human experience of all who enter through its doors in the future.--From preface

A Critical History Of Contemporary Architecture written by Elie G. Haddad and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-12-05 with Architecture categories.

1960, following as it did the last CIAM meeting, signalled a turning point for the Modern Movement. From then on, architecture was influenced by seminal texts by Aldo Rossi and Robert Venturi, and gave rise to the first revisionary movement following Modernism. Bringing together leading experts in the field, this book provides a comprehensive, critical overview of the developments in architecture from 1960 to 2010. It consists of two parts: the first section providing a presentation of major movements in architecture after 1960, and the second, a geographic survey that covers a wide range of territories around the world. This book not only reflects the different perspectives of its various authors, but also charts a middle course between the 'aesthetic' histories that examine architecture solely in terms of its formal aspects, and the more 'ideological' histories that subject it to a critique that often skirts the discussion of its formal aspects.

If there is anything to be learned from the history of American architecture it is that it reflects the American adventure in creativity and inventiveness, and the desire to be unique and expressive. In The Groundbreakers, Charles E. Dagit, Jr. examines pioneering American architects and the historical events and trends that gave rise to their achievements. These architects, the caliber of Frank Lloyd Wright and Frank Gehry, created their own distinct, personal styles, and represented the rich heritages of their specific geographical regions. The American pioneer spirit of individualism is alive and well in the architectural world, and like other American innovations, architecture as practiced in the United States is constantly renewing itself and finding new ways to capture the imagination. This book will be of interest to historians, architects, and students in American studies. Illustrations add dimension to the author's observations.

Pastiche written by Ingeborg Hoesterey and has been published by Indiana University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001 with Appropriation (Art). categories.

Pastiche Cultural Memory in Art, Film, Literature Ingeborg Hoesterey Traces the rise of the pastiche in the arts and popular culture. In the last two decades cultural theorists and artists have redefined a genre of artistic expression that for centuries was regarded as both elusive and notorious: the pastiche, or pasticcio. Today, highly engaging manifestations of the genre minor can be found in architecture, painting, and mixed media installations; in film, literature, and performance modes ranging from the operatic to rock event; and in supposedly trivial discourses such as advertising. Postmodern pastiche is about cultural memory as a history of seeing and writing. One of the markers that sets aesthetic postmodernism apart from modernism is artistic practice that borrows ostentatiously from the archive of Western culture, which modernism, in its search for the unperformed, tended to dismiss. Contemporary artists are re-examining traditions that modernism eclipsed in its pursuit of the "Shock of the New" or--in the case of architects--the functionalism of the International style. Ingeborg Hoesterey, Professor of Comparative Literature and Germanic Studies at Indiana University, is author of Verschlungene Schriftzeichen: Intertextualität von Literatur und Kunst in der Moderne/Postmoderne; editor of Zeitgeist in Babel: The Postmodernist Controversy; and co-editor of Intertextuality: German Literature and Visual Art from the Renaissance to the Twentieth Century and Neverending Stories: Toward a Critical Narratology.
