Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.

Excerpt from The Post of Honour: Stories of Daring Deeds Done by Men of the British Empire in the Great War The author has used a large number of sources - newspapers, official reports, private letters and diaries, as well as books - in gathering the facts for these simple stories. Acknowledgments have been made wherever it was possible to trace the source, and indulgence is asked if through inadvertence or inability to find the original report any requisite acknowledgment has been omitted. Very meagre particulars of most of these brave deeds are at present available, for the British V.C. does not talk of his exploits. But such facts as are actually known ought surely to be given the widest possible publicity, especially in the schools of the Empire. The Battle of Trafalgar can claim to be one of the most known of the great human events. In Men of Honour, Adam Nicolson takes one of the greatest identifiable heroes in British history, Horatio Nelson, and examines the broader themes of heroism, violence and virtue. Trafalgar gripped the nineteenth century imagination like no other battle: it was a moment of both transcendent fulfilment and unmatched despair. It was a drama of such violence and sacrifice that the concept of total war may be argued to start from there. It finished the global ambitions of a European tyrant but culminated in the death of Admiral Horatio Nelson, the greatest hero of the era. This book fuses the immediate intensity of the battle with the deeper currents that were running at the time. It has a three-part framework: the long, slow six hour morning before the battle; the afternoon itself of terror, death and destruction; and the shocked, exultant and sobered aftermath ...

Published in 1886, the golden age of the British Empire in its Victorian heyday, this is a red-blooded patriotic account of the daring deeds of one of Scotland's proudest military names - the Highland Brigade - and its doings in the Crimean War and the Indian Mutiny. The Brigade fought in all the major engagements of the Crimea - including the battles of Alma ('the thin red line') and Balaclava. Then, under its famous commander, Sir Colin Campbell, it was transferred from the snowy trenches around Sebastapol to the steamy heat of India at the height of the Mutiny. The Brigade recaptured Cawnpore from the mutineers, before marching to the relief of the besieged garrison at Lucknow. The book's final chapters recount the Brigade's part in the Ashanti and first Boer War and the wars in Sudan. Plentifully illustrated with photographs and drawings, this is popular Victorian military history at its best.

Indigenous Fijians were singularly fortunate in having a colonial administration that halted the alienation of communally owned land to foreign settlers and that, almost for a century, administered their affairs in their own language and through culturally congenial authority structures and institutions. From the outset, the Fijian Administration was criticised as paternalistic and stifling of individualism. But for all its problems it sustained, at least until World War II, a vigorously autonomous and peaceful social and political world in quite affluent subsistence — underpinning the celebrated exuberance of the culture exploited by the travel industry ever since.
