Abstract: "Waste generation in the United States has prompted consumers and industry to reconsider the fate of materials after useful life. Recycling has come to the forefront of concern for many as the solution to the waste problem. Post-consumer waste collection and processing has become a growing industry for materials in municipal solid waste and larger items such as automobiles, to construction and manufacturing wastes. But along with this interest in recovery has not been similar attention for the incorporation of these materials into new products. Problems with quality, quantity and cost have plagued the market for recycled materials in the past. The collection and separation of materials is only cost effective for a subset of all materials. Recycled materials available for new products have been expensive or substandard compared to virgin materials. The resulting low-value mixed materials have little chance of entering the market as equals to virgin materials that have a well-established business infrastructure. Improvements are needed along every stage of materials use to aid the acceptance of recycled materials in business and industry. This thesis examines the changes necessary in collection and preparation of materials, marketing, and materials descriptions to advance the use of recycled materials in designing and manufacturing new products. A model is developed for identification and specification of materials to compare relevant material properties and to make materials selection an easier task for designers and manufacturers. Finally, advances in the secondary materials market are explored to get the materials into new products. The result is a systematic methodology for clearly describing a recycled material so that it can be substituted into new products. The basis for the work is a case study on recovering the material in post-consumer carpets. The example of the used carpets is one that can be followed by other recycled materials attempting to enter the market. The thesis examines the current state of industry for collecting and processing the material for use in new products. The identification and specification methodologies have been completed on this material. Based on these results, applications for the material have been found, including telephone poles, mechanical bearings, roadway and railway appurtenances and automotive parts."
