The output not only exceeded that of previous Octobers, but was 5 percent larger than the September production. In all previous years except l9h7, October production had been smaller. However, high October production continues past trends towards earlier fall production. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Poultry and Egg Situation, Vol. 132: January 1949 Production of eggs in the fall and winter months has increased relative to spring. This change is due to the faster increase in rate of lay per bird in the october-january period compared with other months of the year. The upward trend in the rate of lay is primarily the result of progress in breeding and flock management. With this uptrend, the Nation's current egg requirements are being met with fewer layers than in earlier years, even when the increase in population is considered. Excerpt from The Poultry and Egg Situation: October, 1949 The American poultry industry in 19h9 was at a production level about as high as any other peacetime year. This is true even considered relative'to the growing population of the United States. The prospective moderate reductions in numbers of young poultry in 1950 must be viewed in comparison with the large 19h9 numbers, which were exceeded only in the war years when this country undertook food supply responsibilities abroad. Excerpt from The Poultry and Egg Situation: March, 1949 Farm chicken prices in mid-february, at 29 5 cents per pound, were 1. 2 cents lower than a month earlier but still 3. 5 cents higher than a year earlier.' nevertheless, the cents-per pound decline from January 15 to February 15 -was the largest on record for that month. This probably reflects toéa considerable extent the increasing production of commercial broilers during the winter months. Poultry supplies during this period are relatively larger than they used to be when storage stocks were the major source. 'weaknesses at this time of the year in prices received by farmers for chickens, principally hens indicate the high degree of competition between the various market classes and the increased importance of commercial broilers in the poultry meat supply. Excerpt from The Poultry and Egg Situation: May-June, 1949 Egg prices rose during May. U. S. Farm prices, averaging cents per dozen, were cents higher than in April, and the increase for tep grade eggs in metropolitan markets was even greater. The greater increase in the price of top-grade eggs is probably a result of warmer weather which reduces the proportion of high-quality eggs in the general run of eggs brought to market. The l.icente rise in farm eog prices from April to May is larger than usual. In two of the years since 1940, the May price has been lower than the April figure, and in only one other recent year, 1939, did the rise exceed 1 cent. In part the rise may have been affected by the one half of 1 percent decline in April egg production compared with March this year. The usual production trend from March to April has been an increase of about 5 percent in farm egg production. The relatively large diversion of eggs to hatcheries, suggested as a factor in the price increase, was more than offset by the relatively small volume of eggs put in storage.
