Excerpt from The Message and Mission of Quakerism The two addresses which compose this book were delivered at the Five Years Meeting of the Society of Friends held in Indianapolis Indiana, from October 15th to 22nd, 1912. They were listened to with profound interest and appreciation, and were approved by a Minute which also ordered their publication, in order that the wider group of Friends, and all others who are interested in the message and mission of a religion of this type, might have the opportunity to read them. It is a plain duty of any religious body to put its truths into circulation, and to reinterpret again and again the vital principles by which its members live and work. Excerpt from The Beginnings of Quakerism And all the passages and travels and sufferings Of Friends in the beginning of the spreading Of the Truth, which I have kept together, will make a fine history: and they may be had at Swarthmore with my other books. SO it is a fine thing to know the beginning Of the spreading of the Gospel after so long night of apostasy since the Apostles' days, that now Christ reigns as He did in the hearts of His people. Excerpt from The Faith of a Quaker There arise also the insistent questions which beset all mystics, and which in Quakerism demanded a corporate, instead of an individual, answer. Was the light infallible? Was the claim to it an assumption of spiritual exaltation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Quakers: A Study, Historical and Critical In 1872 the writer of this book returned in broken health from a second period of missionary labour in China. Two years later some members of the Society of Friends invited him to become secretary of a Committee formed to agitate for the suppression of the Opium Trade between India and China. At this time he was totally ignorant of the history and religious belief of the Friends, unless the vague and hazy notions about them in the popular mind be called knowledge. Although association in philanthropic work, and much kindness received by him, produced in his mind a high esteem for their Society, strange to say, he remained in the same state of ignorance for nine years. The Quakers do not proselytize: and he was too much absorbed in other studies to enter upon an investigation which seemed of no practical interest. The study of the Evidences of Christianity, commenced in China for the sake of the heathen, had to be continued at home in the face of the rising tide of scepticism, which threatened to sweep away the very foundations of the Christian faith. A long and sore mental conflict he had to pass through, in the course of which he was sometimes reduced well-nigh to despair. But in the great mercy of God, he kept his hold on the faith, or rather the truth kept its hold upon him; until gradually a new conception of the Christian religion and its evidences was revealed to him.
