Excerpt from A General and Bibliographical Dictionary of the Fine Arts In the present state of intellectual society, when the Sovereign and the Legislature of the country are giving such splendid encouragement to the Fine Arts; when every class of the people is daily becoming more interested in their cultivation; when new societies for their encouragement are being established, and those already in existence are increasing; a Dictionary exclusively devoted to the Literature of the Fine Arts is peculiarly necessary. Such a work has never before appeared in the English language: and, although there are treatises in the French, Italian, and other modern languages, yet they are inapplicable in many requisites to the English student, professor, or patron of the British School of Art. With the French the Fine Arts comprise not only Painting, Sculpture, Architecture, and Engraving, but also poetry, music, and the dramatic art, which in England are separately classed among the Polite arts, as well as dancing, fencing, mimetic action, and other bodily accomplishments, which we do not admit into either. The Italians are more select in their arrangement, but their disquisitions rarely extend to the English school, and are consequently defective in information concerning an important feature in modern art; as the time is now arrived when no treatise on the Fine Arts can be complete in which the English school, its artists, its mode of practice, and its works are omitted. The present Work, therefore, professes to give in alphabetical order the essence of the best Treatises in the English, the French, and the Italian languages, on the Theory and Practice of the Fine Arts, divested of all extraneous matter, and adapted to the present state of British Art and Literature. France And The Visual Arts Since 1945 written by Catherine Dossin and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-09-20 with Art categories.

Taking on the myth of France's creative exhaustion following World War II, this collection of essays brings together an international team of scholars, whose research offers English readers a rich and complex overview of the place of France and French artists in the visual arts since 1945. Addressing a wide range of artistic practices, spanning over seven decades, and using different methodologies, their contributions cover ground charted and unknown. They introduce greater depth and specificity to familiar artists and movements, such as Lettrism, Situationist International or Nouveau Réalisme, while bringing to the fore lesser known artists and groups, including GRAPUS, the Sociological Art Collective, and Nicolas Schöffer. Collectively, they stress the political dimensions and social ambitions of the art produced in France at the time, deconstruct the traditional geography of the French art world, and highlight the multiculturalism of the French art scene that resulted from its colonial past and the constant flux of artistic travels and migrations. Ultimately, the book contributes to a story of postwar art in which France can be inscribed not as a main or sub chapter, but rather as a vector in the wider constellation of modern and contemporary art.

Excerpt from Exhibition of Contemporary French Art for the Relief Fund for the Families of French Soldier Artists Through the Ministry of Fine Arts and La Fraternité Des Artistes, Paris: Under the Auspices of the American Artists' Committee of One Hundred; La Société Des Architectes Diplomes Par Le Gouvernement; Français, Groupe Américain; The Society of Beaux-Arts Architects; The Museum of French Art; L'alliance Française; January, 1916 In France, that fairest of all hyacinth gardens, the artists are in the trenches and Rodolphe and Schaunard are just Poilus like the rest. The hyacinth crop can wait; just now the crop of dragon teeth must be sown and harvested. And meanwhile what of the Mimis and Musettes who have been left behind? What of the mamans and the bébés? What of the vieux? All this little world was dependent on the rapins for bread as well as for good cheer, but now that the béret has been replaced by the képi, there is little of good cheer and less of bread.
