Excerpt from The Presentation of Time in the Elizabethan Drama The double-time scheme is a method of dealing with the dramatic element of time whereby two im pressions are given simultaneously - one of swiftness and one of slowness; by one series of allusions the action seems to drive ahead furiously, while by ao other series the lapse of weeks and months is ex pressed. Such a device involves a presentation of events under two aspects, one hastening the action to produce excitement and tension, the other pro longing the action, sometimes to the extent of por fraying within the limits of the drama the changes in emotions and motives belonging to a lifetime. This illusory treatment of time has peculiar advan tages, by which it is possible to impose an effect of continuity and concentration upon a plot requiring for its accomplishment the lapse of a long period of time. Excerpt from The Presentation of Time in the Elizabethan Drama The Elizabethan drama gains in significance when it is looked upon from the standpoint of its evolutionary development, rather than in the light shed by three or four great names. A study of the dramatic element of time opens an avenue through which a view of the drama of this period as an organic body may be obtained, since the plays, structurally considered, present features which reflect the spirit of the Elizabethan age - reliance upon the methods inherited from the miracle plays, an indifference to the dicta derived from the Latin drama, preference for complexity in subject-matter, confusion regarding different types of plays, and neglect of precision in general. During this period, the fundamental validity of an appeal to the imagination in dramatic art was more clearly demonstrated than ever before or since. Moreover, each dramatist, in the time-schemes of his plays, reveals his skill in construction; indeed, the degree of success with which he blends the time-movements of a major and a minor plot is a subtle test of his synthetic power. In the earlier plays, the manner of handling time displays their deficiency in design, and, in the later plays, shows how artificial and strained the drama became. Shakespeare's art can be more readily understood, and more properly evaluated, when it is seen in relation to the technique of his contemporaries. Excerpt from The Minor Elizabethan Drama, Vol. 1: Pre-Shakespearean Tragedies The dramas written during the first thirty years of Eliza beth's reign are not easily arranged in categories. They deal with many kinds of subjects, and they recall many diflerent models. Any single play, in fact, is sure to reveal in some measure the conflicting influences of the two great traditions that were then struggling for mastery. The mediaeval religious dram a, with its miracles and moralities, had been for centuries virtually the only dramatic tradition existing; but by I 559, in England, as elsewhere in europe, the new learning had brought to men's knowledge the tragedies and comedies of Greece and Rome. Although miracle plays had nearly ceased, their chief characteristics long survived: their epic structure, their adherence to the method of translation, their mixture of the terrible and the ludicrous, their medley of persons from all walks in life, and their readiness to exhibit anything whatever on the stage. And, although moralities were already losing their pro-eminence, abstractions figuring as characters in a symbolic presentation of life continued to be common until Shakespeare's time. The classical models, on the other hand, were winning imitators as well as admirers. By translations, by nee-latin or vernacular imitations, by adaptations of biblical story to Terentian or Senecan form, by dramatisation of classical story or myth, and by many other processes, they were becoming familiar to actors and play-goers at court, school, and even in public theatres. While, as Sir Philip Sidney complained, there were very few right comedies or right tragedies, there were an increasing number which showed that their authors had studied classical theory and practice. Time Narrative And Emotion In Early Modern England written by Dr David Houston Wood and has been published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd. this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-04-28 with Literary Criticism categories.

Exploiting a link between early modern concepts of the medical and the literary, David Houston Wood suggests that the recent critical attention to the gendered, classed, and raced elements of the embodied early modern subject has been hampered by its failure to acknowledge the role time and temporality play within the scope of these admittedly crucial concerns. Wood examines the ways that depictions of time expressed in early modern medical texts reveal themselves in contemporary literary works, demonstrating that the early modern recognition of the self as a palpably volatile entity, viewed within the tenets of contemporary medical treatises, facilitated the realistic portrayal of literary characters and served as a structuring principle for narrative experimentation. The study centers on four canonical, early modern texts notorious among scholars for their structural- that is, narrative, or temporal- difficulties. Wood displays the cogency of such analysis by working across a range of generic boundaries: from the prose romance of Philip Sidney's Arcadia, to the staged plays of William Shakespeare's Othello and The Winter's Tale, to John Milton's stubborn reliance upon humoral theory in shaping his brief epic (or closet drama), Samson Agonistes. As well as adding a new dimension to the study of authors and texts that remain central to early modern English literary culture, the author proposes a new method for analyzing the conjunction of character emotion and narrative structure that will serve as a model for future scholarship in the areas of historicist, formalist, and critical temporal studies.
