Uncompromising and extraordinarily moving, Assignments - The Press Photographer's Year is a unique reflection of twelve months of world events, as seen through the eyes of some of the finest news photographers working today. The Press Photographer's Year is an annual open competition showcasing the best press photography taken for and used by the UK print media, and is held in association with the British Press Photographer's Association (BPPA). Assignments - The Press Photographer's Year is the centrepiece of the competition. Edited down from over 6,000 submissions by an independent jury of photographers and picture editors, it reflects the kaleidoscopic nature of the human experience and includes many previously unseen images. Beginning with the aftermath of the Asian Tsunami, and ending with the trial of Saddam Hussein, 2005 witnessed events of major historic significance. From the death of the Pope to the London suicide bombings, from the Live 8 concerts to the marriage of Prince Charles, and from Tony Blair's historic third term victory to Hurricane Katrina and the devastating earthquakes in Pakistan, the world has been changed forever by the milestones, some tragic, some triumphant, of this eventful year. Assignments - The Press Photographer's Year records the news as it happens, where it happens. REVIEWS 'The high level of artistry represented here, even when produced in near-impossible conditions, is often awe-inspiring.' Metro, June 2006 'Every page turn reveals another striking image from the past year... an outstanding collection.' Digital Photo, August 2006 'This highlights the cream of the crop of last year's press photography... wherever there's violence, war, famine or celebrity, there are press photographers sending flashlights of truth into the darkness. A picture really can be worth a thousands words.' Gay Times, July 2006 'An uncompromising and moving chronicle of world events as seen through the eyes of the finest photographers at work today.' New York City has earned its place as the media capital of the world, and its newspapers have chronicled life, death, triumph, and tragedy. While people like Damon Runyon, Walter Winchell, and Jimmy Breslin are remembered for how they wrote about the news, the people who documented it visually are mostly forgotten. For many decades, photographers who captured iconic images for New York newspapers did so anonymously--picture credit lines were a rarity. This is the story of the people behind the pictures, a history of the historians. In 1915, a group of lensmen formed a fraternal organization to promote their craft and support one another through hardship. A century later, the New York Press Photographers Association (NYPPA) is regarded as the oldest press association in America, and it still advocates for its members in an ever-changing field. At work or at play, New York's photojournalists are hardly the nameless, faceless bunch history would have us believe them to be.

The stolen snapshot is a staple of the modern tabloid press, as ubiquitous as it is notorious. The first in-depth history of British tabloid photojournalism, this book explores the origin of the unauthorised celebrity photograph in the early 20th century, tracing its rise in the 1900s through to the first legal trial concerning the right to privacy from photographers shortly after the Second World War. Packed with case studies from the glamorous to the infamous, the book argues that the candid snap was a tabloid innovation that drew its power from Britain's unique class tensions. Used by papers such as the Daily Mirror and Daily Sketch as a vehicle of mass communication, this new form of image played an important and often overlooked role in constructing the idea of the press photographer as a documentary eyewitness. From Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson to aristocratic debutantes Lady Diana Cooper and Margaret Whigham, the rage of the social elite at being pictured so intimately without permission was matched only by the fascination of working class readers, while the relationship of the British press to social, economic and political power was changed forever.Initially pioneered in the metropole, tabloid-style photojournalism soon penetrated the journalistic culture of most of the globe. This in-depth account of its social and cultural history is an invaluable source of new research for historians of photography, journalism, visual culture, media and celebrity studies.

The Making Of Visual News written by Thierry Gervais and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-09-23 with Photography categories.

The Making of Visual News sets out to show how photography has changed the way we read, report and sell the news. It investigates how photographs first became news images at the end of the nineteenth century and how magazines in the USA, the UK, France and Germany have put them to use ever since. Drawing on a wide selection of images, author Thierry Gervais (in collaboration with Gaëlle Morel) analyses news photographs in the context of their original presentation in print. Highly illustrated, the book contains 85 full colour magazine layouts and spreads, offering the reader a view of how photographs were and are used in print publications, including Life, Picture Post, the Berliner Illustrirte Zeitung and VU. It examines how photographs were employed to attract new readers throughout the twentieth century, arguing that photography was the main tool by which news editors sought to communicate the news and attract a broader readership. Looking beyond the roles of photographer and journalist, this study also highlights the contributions of picture editors and artistic directors; by commissioning photographs and incorporating images into magazine layouts, these figures played critical but often overlooked roles in the construction of visual news, even as they crafted unique styles for their publications. Charting changes in technology and reportage, as well as broader social and political histories, The Making of Visual News offers new insight into the history of photojournalism, making this an essential resource for students and scholars of photojournalism and the history of photography, media and culture
