Rich with surprise and hilarious adventure, THE PRINCE AND THE PAUPER is a delightful satire of England's romantic past and a joyful boyhood romp filled with the same tongue-in-cheek irony that sparked the best of Mark Twain's tall tales. Two boys, one an urchin from London's filthy lanes, the other a prince born in a lavish palace, unwittingly trade identities. Thus a bedraggled "Prince of Poverty" discovers that his private dreams have all the come true - while a pampered Prince of Wales finds himself tossed into a rough-and-tumble world of squalid beggars and villainous thieves. Originally written as a story for children, THE PRINCE AND THE PAUPER is a classic novel for adults as well - through its stinging attack on the ageless human folly of attempting to measure true worth by outer appearances.

Mark Twain wrote The Prince and the Pauper and dedicated it to his two daughters, Clara and Susie. In a departure from his usual style, Twain weaves a delightful story of the prince who wants to see something of the world, and the pauper who wants to escape from the cruelty of his world. Illustrated with pen-and-ink drawings.

Mark Twain's first attempt at historical fiction, "The Prince and the Pauper", was first distributed in 1881. It is a story set in the hour of Prince Edward, of house Tudor, who at age nine would become King Edward VI. At the point when youthful Prince Edward meets a Pauper, Tom Canty, who prefers a ton like him, he persuades the two to switch garments with the goal that they can be confused with one another and wind up exchanging places. While they assume out their new jobs, Prince Edward learns of the battles of the everyday citizens of England while Tom finds what it resembles to be a Prince and afterward a King. Twain composed with respect to his novel that, "My idea is to afford a realizing sense of the exceeding severity of the laws of that day by inflicting some of their penalties upon the King himself and allowing him a chance to see the rest of them applied to others. . ." A magnificently comedic story, "The Prince and the Pauper" is at its heart a social critique on passing judgment on others basically by their appearance.

Two boys from two different walks of life change places and alter their paths forever in this American classic from Mark Twain London, 1547. Two boys meet by chance and strike up a conversation at the gates of a palace. Tom Canty is a poor young boy with few prospects in life; his new friend happens to be Prince Edward VI, the Prince of Wales. The prince and the pauper could not be more different from one another, except for the small fact that they look identical. When Tom admires the prince's fine garments, he and Prince Edward decide on the spur of the moment to swap clothes. But with cruel irony the prince is mistaken for a poor beggar in Tom's rags and kicked out of his own palace while Tom is taken to be the prince by everyone he meets. Suddenly the prince and the pauper have swapped not only clothes but also their homes, families, lives, and their very identities. While the boys are eager to learn about life in someone else's shoes, they ultimately want to return to their own homes and families. But this proves to be a tall order when nobody believes the prince's claims that he is really a prince despite being clothed in rags. This gripping tale of mistaken identity sees Mark Twain venturing into historical fiction for children while displaying his typical flair for witty dialogue and incisive satire.

They share the same birthday and the same face. And when Edward dons Tom's rags, and Tom slips into the royal cloak, no one can tell them apart. The wrong prince will soon be crowned king, unless Edward can produce the Great Seal of England in time to prove his right to the throne. In The Prince and the Pauper, Mark Twain sheds satiric light on class distinctions, personal identity, and power dynamics that seem as germane today as ever before.

The Original - The Prince and the Pauper - Mark Twain. Classic Historical Fiction. Top 100 Historical Fiction. The Prince and the Pauper is a novel by American author Mark Twain. It was first published in 1881 in Canada, before its 1882 publication in the United States. The novel represents Twain's first attempt at historical fiction. Set in 1547, it tells the story of two young boys who are identical in appearance: Tom Canty, a pauper who lives with his abusive father in Offal Court off Pudding Lane in London, and Prince Edward, son of King Henry VIII. Tom Canty, youngest son of a poor family living with the dregs of society in Offal Court, has always aspired to a better life, encouraged by the local priest (who has taught him to read and write). Loitering around the palace gates one day, he sees a prince (the Prince of Wales - Edward VI). Tom is nearly caught and beaten by the Royal Guards; however, Edward stops them and invites Tom into his palace chamber. There the two boys get to know one another, fascinated by each other's life and their uncanny resemblance. They decide to switch clothes "temporarily". Edward leaves in a hurry before the boys are caught at their game, snatching up an article of national importance (which the reader later learns is the Great Seal of England). Soon Prince Edward is trying to escape the brutality of Tom's abusive drunken father. Tom, posing as the prince, tries to cope with court customs and manners. His fellow nobles and palace staff think "the prince" has an illness which has caused memory loss and fear he will go mad. They repeatedly ask him about the missing "Great Seal", but he knows nothing about it; however, when Tom is asked to sit in on judgments, his common-sense observations reassure them his mind is sound.
