Excerpt from The Principles of the Founders At the impressive New Voters' Festival, held here in Faneuil Hall on Patriots' Day, there was nothing more impressive than the words of St. Paul printed at the head of the program, "I am a citizen of no mean city," emphasized as they were in their application to the young citizens of Boston gathered here for that consecration service by the names of the illustrious men in Boston's history, - Winthrop, Adams, Webster, Quincy, Sumner, Emerson, Phillips Brooks, and their great associates, - inscribed upon the walls. I know of nothing that can more powerfully inspire and command the young man as he enters his political life than the consciousness that he belongs to a renowned city and an illustrious Commonwealth, and that he takes his place in the privileged ranks of a procession conspicuous and honored in history and among men. "I am a citizen of no mean city"; "I am a Roman!" - how proudly the words ring out from the lips of Paul of Tarsus! When he said, "I am a Roman," Paul declared himself simply a citizen of the Roman empire. How much prouder was the word upon the lips of Cicero or Caesar, citizens of the great city itself! "I am an Athenian!" - how much the word meant in the mouth of Pericles or of Demosthenes! About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Principles of Iron Founding The object of this work is the elucidation of the principles underlying all of the processes involved in the art of iron founding. The author has himself often felt the need of such a study, for while a number of books on the foundry exist - some very excellent in their way - these are either a collection of data often very poorly digested, or a series of descriptions of methods of operation without giving all the underlying reasons therefor. The author, himself a foundryman, took up this work long after the completion of his University training, and subsequently occupying a chair of engineering at one of the American mining schools. He therefore knew how unsatisfactory any work performed must be to the thinking man if the reasons for so doing are not fully understood. Ever since 1890, therefore, he has worked in the laboratory and at cupola and furnace seeking the why and wherefore of the things that were done and not done. In the course of this scientific and practical experience, the author gained the cooperation and friendship of nearly all the worlds great foundrymen - many of whom are still with us; and his connection with the foundrymen of America, as secretary of their National organization for a seventh of a century has put him rather closely in touch with the numerous and varied problems met within and without the foundry. In all this active - almost frenzied rush of work, the author having made nearly quarter of a million tons of castings in his time - the great need of a thorough understanding of the principles involved in iron founding was ever present, and as so little was definitely known every new problem when fully worked out meant a definite advance. American foundrymen and metallurgists can properly claim the credit for the modern foundry development, and this because the disinterested workers gave the world the benefit of their investigations. The transactions of the foundrymen's associations and the great iron trade journals are still the repositories of this growing fund of information which nevertheless requires discriminating study to separate the kernel from the chaff. New York Times Bestseller Editors' Choice —New York Times Book Review "Ricks knocks it out of the park with this jewel of a book. On every page I learned something new. Read it every night if you want to restore your faith in our country." —James Mattis, General, U.S. Marines (ret.) & 26th Secretary of Defense The Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and #1 New York Times bestselling author offers a revelatory new book about the founding fathers, examining their educations and, in particular, their devotion to the ancient Greek and Roman classics—and how that influence would shape their ideals and the new American nation. On the morning after the 2016 presidential election, Thomas Ricks awoke with a few questions on his mind: What kind of nation did we now have? Is it what was designed or intended by the nation’s founders? Trying to get as close to the source as he could, Ricks decided to go back and read the philosophy and literature that shaped the founders’ thinking, and the letters they wrote to each other debating these crucial works—among them the Iliad, Plutarch’s Lives, and the works of Xenophon, Epicurus, Aristotle, Cato, and Cicero. For though much attention has been paid the influence of English political philosophers, like John Locke, closer to their own era, the founders were far more immersed in the literature of the ancient world. The first four American presidents came to their classical knowledge differently. Washington absorbed it mainly from the elite culture of his day; Adams from the laws and rhetoric of Rome; Jefferson immersed himself in classical philosophy, especially Epicureanism; and Madison, both a groundbreaking researcher and a deft politician, spent years studying the ancient world like a political scientist. Each of their experiences, and distinctive learning, played an essential role in the formation of the United States. In examining how and what they studied, looking at them in the unusual light of the classical world, Ricks is able to draw arresting and fresh portraits of men we thought we knew. First Principles follows these four members of the Revolutionary generation from their youths to their adult lives, as they grappled with questions of independence, and forming and keeping a new nation. In doing so, Ricks interprets not only the effect of the ancient world on each man, and how that shaped our constitution and government, but offers startling new insights into these legendary leaders.

Founders Classics Canons written by Peter Baehr and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-07-05 with Social Science categories.

Founders, classics, and canons have been vitally important in helping to frame sociology's identity. Within the academy today, a number of positionsfeminist, postmodernist, postcolonialquestion the status of "tradition."In Founders, Classics, Canons, Peter Baehr defends the continuing importance of sociology's classics and traditions in a university education. Baehr offers arguments against interpreting, defending, and attacking sociology's great texts and authors in terms of founders and canons. He demonstrates why, in logical and historical terms, discourses and traditions cannot actually be "founded" and why the term "founder" has little explanatory content. Equally, he takes issue with the notion of "canon" and argues that the analogy between the theological canon and sociological classic texts, though seductive, is mistaken.Although he questions the uses to which the concepts of founder, classic, and canon have been put, Baehr is not dismissive. On the contrary, he seeks to understand the value and meaning these concepts have for the people who employ them in the cultural battle to affirm or attack the liberal university tradition.
