Excerpt from The Problem of Methodism: Being a Review of the Residue Theory of Regeneration and the Second Change Theory of Sanctification, and the Philosophy of Christian Perfection The following treatise is the result of years of investigation. The conclusions which we have adopted are the most reasonable and scriptural solution of the difficult problem involved. If there be those who can not accept our views, we shall think none the less of them for it. We claim the right to think and investigate, and we accord the same to others. If any man has any new light to shed upon the problem we have discussed, let him speak in the fear of God and the love of the truth, and we will hear him patiently. As truth is the pearl we prize above rubies, if we are in error we are ready to receive new light. We are not so shut up to our views but that we are ready to adopt any theory of the divine life which is more reasonable and scriptural than the one we have adopted. Our object is not to lower the standard of Christian experience, but to remove some of the confusion which has gathered around it, and place it where the inspired writers left it. Romanticism And Methodism written by Helen Boyles and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-10-14 with Literary Criticism categories.

Exploring the intense relationship between Romantic literature and Methodism, Helen Boyles argues that writers from both movements display an ambivalent attitude towards the expression of deep emotional and spiritual experience. Boyles takes up the disparaging characterization of William Wordsworth and other Romantic poets as 'Methodistical,' showing how this criticism was rooted in a suspicion of the 'enthusiasm' with which the Methodist movement was negatively identified. Historically, enthusiasm has generated hostility and embarrassment, a legacy that Boyles suggests provoked concerted efforts by Romantic poets such as Wordsworth and the Methodist leaders John and Charles Wesley to cleanse it of its derogatory associations. While they distanced themselves from enthusiasm's dangerous and hysterical manifestations, writers and religious leaders also identified with the precepts and inspiration of a language and religion of the heart. Boyles's analysis encompasses a range of literary genres from the Methodist sermon and hymn, to literary biography, critical review, lyric and epic poem. Balancing analysis of creative content with a consideration of its critical reception, she offers readers a detailed analysis of Wordsworth's relationship to popular evangelism within a analytical framework that incorporates Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Robert Southey, and William Hazlitt.

Beginning as a renewal movement within Anglicanism in the eighteenth century, Methodism had become the largest Protestant denomination in the USA in the nineteenth century, and is today one of the most vibrant forms of Christianity. Representing a complex spiritual and evangelistic experiment that involves a passionate commitment to worldwide mission, it covers a global network of Christian denominations. In this Very Short Introduction William J. Abraham traces Methodism from its origins in the work of John Wesley and the hymns of his brother, Charles Wesley, in the eighteenth century, right up to the present. Considering the identity, nature, and history of Methodism, Abraham provides a fresh account of the place of Methodism in the life and thought of the Christian Church. Describing the message of Methodism, and who the Methodists are, he also considers the practices of Methodism, and discusses the global impact of Methodism and its decline in the homelands. Finally Abraham looks forward, and considers the future prospects for Methodism.
